Coastal Falls in Series Finale At Troy
TROY, AL - Coastal Carolina softball (22-23, 5-13 SBC ) dropped the final game of their series with the Troy Trojans (27-17, 11-7 SBC) on Saturday afternoon by the score of 6-3. The Trojans scored in the first four innings using three doubles to help jump out to an early 6-1 lead.
Back to back walks opened up the game for the Trojans. But two batters later Stephanie Snyder fouled out to Coastal second baseman Taylor Sweigart who made a great catch in foul territory but leadoff hitter Logan Calhoun was able to tag up from third base to score the run the first run of the game.
The Chants answered back to tie it in the top of the second as Natalie David singled up through the middle. Two batters later Stavi Augur connected on her sixth double of the season down the left field line scoring David all the way from first.
In the bottom half of the inning, Snyder chased Coastal starter Ashley Guillette from the game as she doubled to left field. After a Kaleigh Hussey single to center, Hope Hernandez hit ball down to third baseman Stavi Augur but the freshman infielder had no play at any base as it was hit perfectly to her left.
Troy was able to pick up two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 6-1.
Coastal was able to cut into the Trojan lead in the top of the sixth as freshman Courtney Dean doubled to left on the very first pitch of the inning and then David followed it up with a single to the right side on outside pitch, allowing Dean to advance over to third.
Senior Timi Tooley picked up the first run of the sixth as she singled over the shortstop Logan Calhoun's head. The Chanticleers were poised for a big inning and get themselves back into the game as pinch hitter Angela Bucilli walked on four straight pitches to load the bases. The very next batter, Chelsea D'Avilar worked herself into a three-ball and one-strike count but grounded to third baseman Madeline Porter for a fielder's choice put out. After Troy picked up the second out of the inning, freshman Sweigart, added her 12th run batted in on the of season with a bases loaded walk. Reliever Peyton Glover ended the inning as she was able to retire sophomore Kassidy Smith with a ground ball double play.
Glover would come back for the seventh inning and pick up the hold for herself and as she pitched two scoreless innings while striking out one.
Troy starter Annie Willis improved to 14-4 on the season, as pitched five inninngs while giving up three runs.
Chanticleers reliever Taylor Schmidt was effective in relief as she pitched four innings while giving up two runs.
Coastal returns to action on Tuesday as they host another Colonial Athletic Association opponent, College of Charleston Cougars at 5 p.m. at CCU Softball Stadium.
