RADFORD, Va. - The Coastal Carolina softball team snapped Radford's 17 game home win streak by beating the Highlanders 6-2 in game one on Friday. The Chanticleers then made an impressive comeback during the second game hitting five home runs, but came up just shy against Radford falling 9-8. Coastal is 30-12 and 7-3 following the doubleheader.
During the first inning of the first game the Chanticleers didn't take long to get on the board, as Brooke Donovan hit her third home run of the season to left center field that also scored Sarah Maples. Three batters later, Coastal hit its second home run of the game, as Cacia Pierre hit the ball out of left center field. Pierre recorded her third home run of the season with the hit.
Coastal gave up one hit before posting three straight outs during the bottom of the first inning.
In the bottom of the second, Radford threatened to score when Jackie Warr advanced to third on a double by Jessie Hutchens, but the Chanticleers defense recorded the final two outs to take the game to the top of the third.
Radford pulled within one run of the Chanticleers in the fourth inning when Hutchens hit a home run to left center that also scored Maureen Hepner to put the score at 3-2.
The Chanticleers answered in the top of the fifth inning, when Stacy Snellings tallied her first home run of the season, knocking the ball out of center field, making it a 4-2 game.
Pierre picked up her second home run of the game in the sixth inning, hitting the ball out of right field to extend the Chanticleers lead to four, as Kiana Quolas advanced home on the play.
Coastal gave up only one hit during the final two innings and recorded three straight outs in the seventh to take the first game 6-2.
Pierre finished the game with two hits, three RBI and two runs in three at bats. Donovan had two hits, two RBI and one run in three at bats, while Snellings posted one hit, one RBI and one run in three at bats, along with 10 putouts. Maples and Sara Rasley both recorded three assists.
Quolas pitched a complete game, striking out eight, not allowing a walk and allowing six hits in 29 batters faced to improve to 18-5 in the circle.
Jackie Jenkins took the loss for Radford after allowing two runs, one hit and one walk in two batters faced.
Radford took the early 1-0 lead in the second game when Hutchens hit a single to the right side that scored Warr. Frankie Martinez, who was pinch running for Hutchens advanced home to make it a 2-0 game when Hannah Ojeda hit a double to left field. The Highlanders built up a 4-0 lead when Nichole Beall hit a home run to right center field that also scored Ojeda.
During the bottom of the third, Radford extended its lead to nine following runs by Michelle Beall, Ryndee Ruch, Warr, Morgan Eye, and Ojeda.
After being walked three times through the first three innings Chelsea Pineda earned the Chanticleers first hit of the game in the fourth inning, hitting the ball up the middle for a single.
Kory Hayden helped get the Chanticleers back into the game by hitting her 11th home run of the season, knocking the ball out of left center field. Hayden is tied for eighth on Coastal's single season records list for home runs. Donovan scored on the play to put the score at 9-2. During the Chants next at bat Quolas tallied her first collegiate home run to pull Coastal within six of the Highlanders. Pierre kept the streak going, as she hit a home run, her third of the day, to right field.
Quolas hit the 11th home run of the day in the top of the seventh inning, as she hit the ball out of left field to make it a 9-6 game. Pineda pulled Coastal within one run of Radford, as she hit a home run of her own to left field. The Highlanders picked up the third out before the Chanticleers were able to tie the game to put the final score at 9-8.
Quolas ended the game with two hits, three RBI and two runs in four at bats. Pierre had two hits, two runs and one RBI in three at bats. Donovan had one hit and two runs in two at bats, while being walked twice. Pineda finished the game with two hits, two RBI and one run in four at bats, while also posting six putouts. Hayden recorded one hit, two RBI and one run in four at bats, along with three assists.
Ashley Bagwell pitched six innings striking out six, walking only two and allowing 10 hits in 29 batters faced.
Micalah Sacre pitched 4.2 innings, striking out nine, while walking five and giving up three hits in 22 batters faced for the win.
Coastal wraps up the three game series against Radford on Sunday, April 7. The final game begins at 1 p.m.
