Chanticleers Hold Off Gardner-Webb in Game One; Endure Disappointing 5-4 Loss in Game Two

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team opened up its series against Gardner-Webb by winning the first game 5-2. The Chanticleers were unable to hold off Gardner-Webb in the second game, as the Runnin' Bulldogs scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the 5-4 win. Coastal is 28-11 overall and 5-2 following today's doubleheader.
Coastal opened the first game by holding Gardner-Webb to a three and out in the top of the first inning. Brooke Donovan put the Chants ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the inning when Kiana Quolas hit a single to left center field.
Gardner-Webb tied the game in the second inning when McKenzie Morenus advanced home on a single up the middle by Savannah Burns. The Runnin' Bulldogs tried to take a 2-1 lead, but Rachel Jablonski was out at third for the second out of the game. Coastal closed out the inning when Jessie Winans caught the line drive hit during Melinda Dulkowski's at bat.
During the fourth inning Coastal went ahead by two runs when Paige Goldsack hit a home run to left center field that also scored Sara Rasley. Goldsack's home run was the first of her collegiate career.
The Runnin' Bulldogs pulled within one in the top of the sixth, when Morenus got on base on a double to right field before scoring when Morgan Baker hit a double up the right side.
Ashley Bagwell helped give Coastal the win by giving up only one hit in the seventh inning while striking out three.
Goldsack finished the game with one hit, one RBI and one run in two at bats. Beth Kassuhn recorded one hit and one run in one at bat, while being walked twice. Maples tallied one hit and two RBI in three at bats. Jessie Winans had one hit and one run in one at bat and was walked two times. Rasley tallied seven putouts in the win and Kory Hayden had four putouts and four assists. Quolas also had four assists.
Quolas earned the win on the mound after pitching 5.1 innings in which she struck out two, walked four and allowed four hits in 24 batters faced. Bagwell recorded the save after pitching 1.2 innings, in which she struck out three and allowed just one hit in five batters faced.
Jessica Childers posted the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs after pitching 1.3 innings, striking out one, walking six and giving up three hits in 19 batters faced.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took the 1-0 lead in the second game in the top of the second inning when Burns scored on a single by Kellie Beres to left field. Coastal wasn't down for long, as Chelsea Pineda hit a home run to right field in the bottom of the inning, which scored Nicole Saggiomo and Goldsack. Pineda's home run was her sixth of the season.
Jordyn Arrowood made it a one run game in the fifth inning when she scored on a double by Morenus.
Sarah Maples picked up the Chanticleers' second home run of the game when she hit the ball out of the park in the sixth inning to make it a 4-2 game.
In the top of the seventh inning Baker hit a home run that scored Samantha Meenaghan and Morenus to put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead 5-4.
Coastal looked to at least tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Pineda reached base on a single to the left side. Kelsey McNaughton, who pinch ran for Pineda, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kassuhn. Gardner-Webb picked up the final two outs during the next two at bats for Coastal.
Pineda ended the game with two hits, three RBI and one run in three at bats. Maples finished the game with three hits, one RBI and one run in three at bats. Saggiomo had one hit and one run in one at bat. Rasley completed the game with 12 putouts, while Winans had five assists.
Quolas took the loss following two innings pitched in which she allowed four hits in 10 batters faced.
Alyssa Gutierrez posted the win for Gardner-Webb after pitching six innings, striking out three, not allowing a walk and giving up seven hits in 24 batters faced.
Coastal wraps up the three-game series against Gardner-Webb on Sunday, April 1 with the final game starting at 1 p.m.
