Final Stats
CONWAY - Playing in their first home Big South Conference series, the Chanticleers defeated Charleston Southern 1-0 in the first game, before suffering a tough 1-0 loss in the second game. Coastal is now 27-10 overall and 4-1 in the Big South.
Coastal and Charleston Southern headed into the series atop of the conference standings with 3-0 records.
Coastal Carolina had its share of opportunities to score in the first game, but couldn't come up with a run until the bottom of the seventh inning when Kiana Quolas hit the ball up the middle, which scored Brooke Donovan for the 1-0 win.
The Chanticleers' first chance to score came in the first inning when Donovan advanced to third on a double by Kory Hayden to center field with one out.
Coastal threatened again in the bottom of the third inning when Jessie Winans attempted to score, but was out at the plate. The Chants had the bases loaded later in the inning, but Charleston Southern picked up the third out before Coastal could score.
In the fourth inning the Buccaneers had their best chance to score in the game with Jana Matthews on third base following a passed ball.
The Chants again loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with Donovan at third, Nicole Saggiomo on second and Quolas on first, but Charleston Southern earned the third out of the inning at the plate.
Coastal forced three straight outs during the top of the seventh inning and took the win in the bottom of the inning on Quolas' hit that scored Donovan.
Quolas finished the game with two hits and one RBI in three at bats, while Donovan posted three hits and one run in four at bats. Hayden completed the game with one hit in two at bats and was walked twice. Sara Rasley had eight putouts in the win.
Quolas recorded the win from the rubber as she posted her 10th shutout of the season. Quolas struck out three, walked two and allowed three hits in 26 batters faced.
Morgan Dowdy took the loss for the Buccaneers after striking out four, walking four and giving up seven hits in 31 batters faced.
The defense for both teams played well in the second game. Coastal picked up the first hit of the game in the first inning as Sarah Maples hit the ball up the middle for a single. The Chants were unable to pick up another hit until the sixth inning when Donovan got on base following a single to left field. Rasley was walked in the second, while Hayden was walked in the first and fourth innings.
Charleston Southern had an opportunity to score in the second inning as Stephanie Sbardella was walked. Jasmine Conley pinch ran for Sbardella and advanced to third during Hayes Holdsworth's at bat. Coastal picked up two straight outs leaving Conley on base.
The Buccaneers tallied hits in the third fifth and sixth innings, but could not convert those hits into runs. During the seventh inning Holdsworth got on base with a triple to right field and then scored during Charleston Southern's next at bat, as she squeezed by Pineda at the plate before being tagged out to make it a 1-0 game.
Rasley singled to center field in the bottom of the seventh. Courtney Howell then pinch ran for Rasley and advanced to second during Jessie Winans' at bat. Jazmin Daigle then hit a single, which advanced Howell to third. Daigle then stole second base during Donovan's at bat. Charleston Southern picked up the third out before Coastal could tie the game.
Maples and Rasley both finished the game with one hit in two at bats. Daigle ended the game with one hit in one at bat. Maples had six putouts in the game, while Chelsea Pineda and Winans each had three putouts and three assists.
Ashley Bagwell took the loss for the Chanticleers, following a complete game in which she struck out three, walked two and allowed four hits in 26 batters faced.
Jennifer Giles posted the win after pitching three innings, striking out one and allowing three hits in 13 batters faced.
Coastal returns home on Saturday, March 31 against Gardner-Webb in a double-header that begins at 1 p.m. The Chanticleers wrap up the three-game series against the Runnin' Bulldogs on Sunday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
