CLINTON - The Coastal Carolina softball team opened up Big South Conference play on the road on Saturday with a 5-0 win and an 8-2 win against Presbyterian. Coastal is currently 25-9 on the season and 2-0 in the Big South.
Sarah Maples picked up the Chanticleers' first hit during her first at bat, hitting a single down the left field line, but the Blue Hose picked up three straight outs to take it to the bottom of the inning.
During Presbyterian's first series at the plate they had the bases loaded, but were unable to come up with a score as catcher Cacia Pierre grabbed the foul ball for the third out.
Coastal took the 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Stacy Snellings scored during Sarah Maples' at bat. The Chanticleers extended their lead to 2-0 when Beth Kassuhn advanced home on Brooke Donovan's single through the left side.
Sara Rasley hit her third home run of the season during the top of the fourth inning to give Coastal the 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning Coastal built up a 5-0 lead, following a run by Kassuhn on a double by Donovan. Kiana Quolas then hit a single up the middle during the next at bat for Coastal that scored Donovan.
Heading into the seventh inning, Coastal would go three and out, as Presbyterian headed into the bottom of the inning looking to make a comeback. Cat Travin reached first base on a walk with two outs and Jill McLean reached first on a single. Tera Powell then flied out to left field to end the game and give Coastal its first Big South Conference win.
Donovan finished the game with two hits, two RBI and one run in four at bats. Stacy Snellings recorded two hits and one run in three at bats. Sara Rasley posted one hit, one RBI and one run in two at bats.
Quolas picked up the win in the circle for Coastal, as she pitched a shutout in which she struck out one, walked one and gave up six hits in 29 batters faced.
The Chanticleers carried the momentum into the second game, going ahead 4-0 in the third inning. Maples scored the first run when Quolas singled through the right side. Donovan made it a 2-0 game when she scored on a single by Rasley to right field. Jessie Winans hit a single through the right side with two outs that scored Pierre and Quolas.
Presbyterian went three and out during the bottom of the third inning and the Chanticleers scored a run in the top of the fourth to go ahead 5-0. Kassuhn scored on a passed ball after advancing to third when Donovan grounded out to the first baseman.
The Blue Hose cut into the Chants lead during the bottom of the inning when Erin Taylor hit a homerun to left center that also scored Shelby Petik to make it a 5-2 game. Inclement weather delayed the game for just over an hour. Following the delay Coastal came back to close out the inning and take the game into the fifth inning.
Both teams then had three and outs during the fifth inning. Tamara Hawkins put the Chants ahead four after scoring on Donovan's single to right field. The Chants then went up 7-2 when Maples advanced home on the error by Presbyterian when Quolas was at bat.
Coastal made it an 8-2 game in the seventh inning when Jessie Winans hit her fourth home run of the season to left center field.
Maples ended the game with one hit and two runs in two at bats and she was walked once, while also recording three assists. Donovan recorded two hits, one run and one RBI in four at bats. Winans tallied two hits, three RBI and one run in four at bats. Quolas posted two hits, one RBI and one run in three at bats, while she was walked once. Pierre had two hits and one run in four at bats, while also collecting nine putouts.
Ashley Bagwell recorded the win for Coastal in the circle after striking out eight, not allowing a walk and giving up three hits.
Coastal closes out the three-game series against Presbyterian on Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
