CLEARWATER, Fla. - Eight runs in the third inning helped lead the Coastal Carolina softball team to a 10-0 win against Bryant University on Sunday in the final day of the USF Under Armour Tournament. The Chanticleers improve to 22-8 on the season with the win over the Bulldogs.
Coastal went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Kiana Quolas advanced home during Brooke Donovan's at bat and Stacy Snellings scored when Jazmin Daigle was walked.
The Bulldogs earned its first run in the top of the third, but were unable to get any other offense during the inning.
The Chants had a strong showing offensively in the third inning scoring eight runs. Chelsea Pineda got the scoring going when she hit her fifth home run of the season that also scored Quolas and Cacia Pierre. Snellings recorded her second run of the game when Daigle hit a single down the left side to make it a 6-0 game. Coastal went ahead by seven when Jessie Winans crossed home plate on a single to center field. Donovan and Daigle recorded two more runs for Coastal when Kory Hayden hit a single to left center. Sarah Maples scored the final run of the inning when she advanced home during Quolas' at bat.
Bryant had a runner in scoring position during the top of the fourth inning when Aubrey Mable advanced to second on a single by Madeline Velasquez through the left side. The Chanticleer defense picked up the final two outs of the inning before the Bulldogs could cut into Coastal's lead.
Coastal posted one hit in the fourth inning, as Winans hit a double to left center field with two outs, but the Bulldogs tallied the final out of the inning on the Chanticleers next at bat.
The Chanticleers posted a three and out during the top of the fifth inning to close out the game.
Daigle ended the game with two hits, two RBI and a run in two at bats, while also being walked once. Hayden completed the game with two hits and two RBI in three at bats. Quolas recorded one hit, one RBI and two runs in two at bats. Winans finished the game with two hits and one run in two at bats and was walked once. Pineda posted five putouts and four assists on top of her home run.
Quolas earned the win on the mound for the Chanticleers after pitching five innings, recording a career high eight strikeouts and not giving up a walk, while allowing three hits in 18 batters faced.
Jennifer Jacob pitched four innings for Bryant, striking out two, allowing 10 hits and four walks in 28 batters faced.
"Although it was disappointing to drop three games this weekend, I was pleased with the way we were able to bounce back today and be productive offensively, while having the strong pitching and defense that we have come accustomed to this season," said head coach Kelley Green.
Coastal returns to action on Wednesday, March 21 in a double-header against the College of Charleston. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
