CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team improved to 20-4 on the season after beating North Carolina A&T 9-0 and Hampton 8-0 in five innings on Saturday in the second day of the Chanticleer Showdown. Jessie Winans posted a grand slam in the win against North Carolina A&T, while Sarah Maples posted one in the victory over Hampton.
The Chanticleers built up an early 5-0 lead in the first inning against the Aggies. Jazmin Daigle scored during Chelsea Pineda's at bat to put the score at 1-0. Winans then recorded a grand slam on a 3-2 count to put Coastal ahead by five. The grand slam was Winans' third home run of the season.
North Carolina A&T recorded its first hit of the game in the second inning as Hope Fletcher recorded a single that advanced Sabrina Edmonds to second base. Coastal picked up two outs before the Aggies were able to cut into the Chanticleers' lead.
Maples made it a 6-0 game after scoring on a double by Kory Hayden during the bottom of the second inning. The Chanticleers then went ahead 8-0 on a double to right center by Kiana Quolas that advanced Daigle and Hayden home.
Coastal didn't allow a hit by the Aggies during the third or fourth inning, as Coastal Carolina picked up its ninth and final run in the bottom of the fourth as Jenna Goldsack scored on a single to center field by Nicole Saggiomo.
Hope Fletcher advanced to second on a single up the middle by Tiffany Macklin during the top of the fifth inning, but North Carolina A&T was unable to capitalize on the situation.
Winans finished the game with one hit, four RBI, and one run in two at bats. Hayden completed the game with two hits, two runs and one RBI in two at bats.
Earning the win on the mound for the Chanticleers was Ashley Bagwell, who pitched five innings striking out five, while not allowing a walk and giving up just three hits.
Alexandria McAfee took the loss for the Aggies on the mound following four innings pitched, in which she struck out two, while allowing eight hits and five walks in 26 batters faced.
During the Chanticleers' game against Hampton, both teams were held scoreless until the second inning when Quolas reached home on an error by the Pirates.
In the third inning, Coastal extended its lead to three following a home run by Hayden, which also scored Daigle. The homerun by Hayden was her seventh of the season.
Chelsea Pienda recorded her fourth homerun of the season during the top of the fourth inning to make it a 4-0 game. Following the pitching change, two walks and a single, Sarah Maples hit a grand slam home run that scored Brooke Donovan, Sara Rasley and Saggiomo.
Coastal held Hampton hitless during the fourth and fifth innings, as the Chanticleers took the 8-0 win after five innings.
Maples finished the game with one hit, one run and four RBI in three at bats. Hayden completed the game with one hit, two RBI and one run in three at bats. Rasley posted one hit and one run in two at bats, as well as nine putouts. Winans recorded five assists in the win.
Posting the win on the mound for the Chanticleers was Quolas, who pitched five innings striking out four, while allowing just one hit and one walk in 17 batters faced.
Jailynn Jackson took the loss for the Pirates after pitching 3.1 innings, striking out three and allowing four hits in 15 batters faced.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Sunday, March 11 at noon against La Salle in the final game of the Chanticleer Showdown.
