CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team wrapped up the Coastal Carolina Invitational with an 8-0 win in five innings over Saint Peter's on Sunday to improve to 13-4 on the season. Freshman pitcher Morgan Mastriania recorded the Chanticleers first no-hitter of the 2012 season, as she pitched five innings, striking out four and allowing just one walk in 17 batters faced. The lone walk for the Peahens came in the fifth inning.
Coastal didn't take long to build up a lead over the Peahens, as Kory Hayden was walked with the bases loaded, which allowed Sarah Maples to advance home. During the next at bat, Chelsea Pineda would advance Jazmin Daigle home on a single through the left side to make it a 2-0 game. Saint Peter's brought in Carolyn Griffin to pitch for Shelby Beaver. Kiana Quolas then hit a single up the middle that allowed Hayden and Brooke Donovan to score. The Chanticleers earned their fifth run of the inning on a double by Cacia Pierre that scored Pineda.
Coastal didn't allow a hit through the first four innings of play, as they made it a 6-0 game in the fourth inning following a double by Donovan down the right field line that allowed Maples to cross home plate.
Krystine Rice got into scoring position for the Peahens in the fifth inning after being walked and advancing to second on an error by Coastal, before making it to third on Michelle Tinajero's at bat. The Chanticleers picked up three outs before Rice was able to score.
During the bottom of the fifth inning, Daigle hit a double down the left field line to score Stacy Snellings to make it a 6-0 game. Two batters later, Hayden hit a single to center field that advanced Maples home to put the score at 8-0.
Maples finished the game with three hits and three runs in three at bats, while also being walked once. Quolas posted two hits and two RBI in the win, while Hayden completed the day with one hit and two RBI in two at bats, as she was walked once.
Mastriania is 2-1 on the mound this season for the Chanticleers, having pitched a total of 28.2 innings in nine appearances. She has a 1.75 ERA for Coastal.
Beaver recorded the loss for the Peahens after giving up five runs and two hits, while walking three in five batters faced.
The Chanticleers will return to action on Wednesday, March 7 at home in a double-header against the University of South Carolina. The first pitch will be thrown at 3 p.m.
