Coastal Softball Beats Dartmouth and Nebraska-Omaha

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team opened up the Coastal Carolina Invitational with a 4-2 win over Dartmouth and a 5-0 win against the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Friday to improve to 12-4 on the season.

The Chanticleers didn't take long to get on the board against Dartmouth, as Sarah Maples scored on a single to right field by Brooke Donovan. Chelsea Pineda hit her third home run of the season to put the score at 3-0, as Donovan scored on the play.

During the fifth inning Kory Hayden hit a single to left center field, which allowed Donovan to advance home to give the Chanticleers the 4-0 advantage.

Dartmouth responded in the bottom of the inning as Meghan Everett singled to right field, scoring Morgan Wharton cutting the Chanticleers lead to three.

The Big Green made it a two run game in the seventh when Jonele Conceicao advanced home on an error by the Chanticleers, while Everett was at bat. Dartmouth was unable to cut into Coastal's lead during the remainder of the inning, as Coastal took the 4-2 win.

Ashley Bagwell picked up the win on the mound for Coastal, following 6.2 innings pitched. Bagwell struck out six, gave up three hits and walked four in 27 batters faced.

Kristen Rumley recorded the loss for the Big Green after pitching a complete game, in which she struck out nine, while allowing eight hits and one walk in 32 batters faced.

Maples, Donovan and Pineda each finished the game with one hit and one run in three at bats, while Pineda posted two RBI and six putouts.

During the Chanticleers game against the University of Nebraska-Omaha both teams struggled during the first three innings, as only one hit was recorded.

Hayden put Coastal on the board in the fourth inning, posting her sixth home run of the season that also scored Donovan.

Coastal went ahead 3-0 in the fifth inning, as Sarra Rasley hit a double down the right field line that allowed Jessie Winans to advance home.

The Chanticleers extended their lead during the sixth inning when Jazmin Daigle scored on a throwing error by the Mavericks. Kelsey McNaughton put the score at 5-0, as she scored on a double by Kiana Quolas.

The Mavericks recorded three straight outs in the top of the seventh to give Coastal the 5-0 victory. Quolas pitched a complete game earning her seventh win of the season, as she struck out three, while giving up only one hit and two walks.

Dana Elsasser took the loss on the mound for the University of Nebraska-Omaha, after pitching five innings, in which she struck out five, while allowing five hits and walking two.

Hayden and Donovan both finished the game with one hit and one run in two at bats, while Hayden posted two RBI and four assists. Donovan had five putouts in the win.

Coastal will return to action in the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. in a rematch against Dartmouth, followed by a game against Saint Peter's at 2:30 p.m.
