Walk-Off Walk Lifts Coastal over Campbell, 3-2; CCU Wins Chanticleer Showdown
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team defeated Campbell, 3-2, thanks to a walk-off walk to close out the Chanticleer Showdown Tournament. The Chanticleers went 5-0 over the weekend to win the tournament.
Coastal (12-3) returns to the CCU Softball Field next weekend (March 3-5) for the Coastal Carolina Invitational as the Chanticleers host North Dakota, UCONN and Northern Kentucky.
Campbell took an early 2-0 lead over Coastal in the top of the first. Amber Schisler hit a two-run shot over the center field fence to drive in Madison Casto.
Coastal loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but runners were left stranded after a fly out ended the inning.
In the top of the fifth, freshman pitcher Devin Wallace entered the game with one out and bases loaded. Wallace then struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
A solo home run from Kailey Mellen cut Coastal's deficit in half to make the score 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Alexis Alvino was hit by the pitch, then Amanda Daneker pushed a single up the middle. Timi Tooley followed with an RBI single to score Alvino to tie the game 2-2. With runners on second and third, Mellen was hit by the pitch to load the bases for CCU. Kassidy Smith drew a walk to force in Daneker for the victory.
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Rahach pitched 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. Devin Wallace (4-0) came in relief throwing 2.2 innings aiding the Chanticleers' comeback victory. Wallace had three strikeouts and allowed only one walk.
