CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team fell to DePaul 6-1 in its first game of the Kickin’ Chicken Classic Feb. 26. The Chanticleers fell to 4-5, while the Blue Demons improved to 2-4.

Down three runs in the second, Alyssa Tornatore got the Chants on the scoreboard after an outfield error, driving in Cacia Pierre and putting Olivia Piccirillo, who doubled to center field, in scoring position with one out. With runners in the corners, Coastal could not pull together a hit, ending the inning down 3-1.

Senior pitcher Ashley Frederick started in the circle for the Chants, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out three. In the sixth inning, freshman Megan Johnson came in to relieve Frederick, pitching the final two innings. Johnson allowed just one hit and struck out four, holding the Blue Demons to six runs.

Michelle Evans, Sarah Maples, Jazmin Daigle and Piccirillo all recorded hits for the Chanticleers, but could not find the clutch hit that Coastal needed to score.

DePaul got on the board early in the game, scoring three runs in the second. Frederick kept the Blue Demons hitless in the third, but their bats came alive, tallying one run on two hits in the fourth and two runs on three hits in the fifth, including a two-run home run by Becca Heteniak, to give DePaul a 6-1 lead.

The Chanticleers return to the field tomorrow Feb. 27, to challenge Canisius at 12:15 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m.
