Softball Grabs Victories over Cleveland State and Penn State; Green Records 600th Career win
CONWAY - Coastal Carolina head coach Kelley Green recorded her 600th career victory after an impressive 12-0 win over Cleveland State before the Chants turned around to defeat Penn State 3-1 in the second game of the mixed doubleheader.
Green now holds a (601-304) over her 17 years combined as a head coach at Lock Haven (346-134, 10 years) and Coastal (255-170, 8 years).
Coastal (11-3) will return to the field tomorrow to face Campbell at 2 pm to close out the Chanticleer Showdown.
In game one, Coastal took an early 3-0 lead over Cleveland State in the first. Taty Forbes smacked a leadoff double, then Alexis Alvino followed suit delivering an RBI double to plate Forbes. Amanda Daneker went yard clearing the bases to put the Chants in front.
In the bottom of the second inning, CCU increased its advantage to make it 7-0. With runners on second and third, Payton Hanson delivered an RBI single to score pincer runner Lauren Fedorchak. Alvino followed with a two-run RBI double to send Hanson and Kassidy Smith to the plate. Later, Timi Tooley reached on a fielder's choice sending Alvino to the plate.
A solo home run from Smith put Coastal ahead 8-0 in the bottom of the third. Alvino and Daneker each delivered a single to put runners on first and second. Kailey Mellen smacked an RBI single to center field to send Alvino home. Mackenzie Budinger hit a sacrifice fly to score Daneker. Later, Smith drilled an RBI single then advanced to second thanks to a Cleveland State error, allowing Mellen to score. Angela Buccilli hit an RBI single to score Toro to provide the eventual final score, 12-0.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Guillette (2-2) pitched a one-hitter over five innings of work with seven strikeouts and allowing one walk.
In game two, Coastal pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead over Penn State. Mellen smacked an RBI single up the middle to score Forbes.
Penn State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. With a runner on third, Delaney Elling pushed an RBI single through to score Tori Dubois.
Coastal regained the lead in the fifth to secure the Chants victory, 3-1. Tooley hit an RBI double to send Forbes to the plate. Later, Smith reached on a PSU error that allowed Tooley to score.
Taylor Rahach (6-0) threw 7.0 innings, allowed six hits and recorded six strikeouts.
