Coastal Drops Two On Saturday
CONWAY - The Chanticleers softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon as part of the Chanticleer Showdown at CCU Softball Stadium when they fell in game 1 to the Pittsburgh Panthers, 4-3 and then in the evening game against the Saint Joseph's Hawks for the second straight night.
Pittsburgh got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Giorgiana Zeremenko singled to center and then Kaitlyn Kruger homered over the center field fence. Coastal was able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third as junior Natalie David led off with double to left and then three batters later, freshman Stavi Augur knocked in her sixth RBI of the season, scoring David from second.
It didn't take long for the Panthers to come back to get their third and fourth runs because in the top of the fourth, Erin Hershman hit a two-run homer down the right-field line.
In their last at-bats of the game, the Chants didn't go quietly as senior Timi Tooley led off with a single to center field. Pitt was able to get Taylor Sweigart to fly out to center, but David came up and connected for her first home run of the year to bring around her and Tooley.
Panther's starter Sarah Dawson was able to shut down the Chants rally to get the final two outs for her sixth win of the season.
The Chants picked up a run in the first and third innings but the Hawks were able to plate 11 runs on 10 hits in the top of the fourth with the help of three home runs as it took all three pitchers on the Chanticleers' roster to navigate through.
Just as Coastal was about to be handed a mercy rule loss, they were able to fight back for three runs to extend the game with runs from freshman Taylor Sweigart and Tooley and another RBI big single from Augur.
CCU had one more chance in the bottom of the seventh as Chelsea D'Avilar led off with an infield single to the third baseman, but again Hawks were able to shut down another Coastal rally to end the game and go on to win 11-6.
Coastal returns tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. when they face Georgetown in the last game of the Chanticleer Showdown.
