CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team picked up a 4-0 win against Temple and a 6-0 victory against Sacred Heart Friday in the opening day of the Chanticleer Challenge to improve to 8-3 on the season.
Coastal had a strong showing in the bottom of the second inning to take the 3-0 lead over the Owls. Tamara Hawkins scored the first run for the Chanticleers on a double by Kiana Quolas. Sara Rasley then hit her second home run of the season on the Chanticleers' next at bat, which also scored Quolas.
Both teams were unable to record a hit during the next two innings. Temple posted their first hit of the game in the top of the fifth, but they were unable to garner any more hits during the inning.
The Chanticleer defense carried the team during the remaining two innings, as Coastal took the 4-0 win.
Kiana Quolas earned her fourth win of the season on the mound for Coastal, as she pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and one walk, while striking out five.
Jessica Mahoney recorded the loss for Temple following six innings pitched, in which she allowed eight hits and walked two, while striking out three.
Maples finished the game with two hits and one RBI in three at bats. Rasley finished the game with one hit, two RBI and one run in two at bats. She was also walked once and defensively she tallied eight putouts. Kory Hayden completed the game with six assists.
During the game against Sacred Heart Brooke Donovan got things going offensively for the Chanticleers as she hit her second home run of the season in the first inning. Chelsea Pineda made it a 2-0 game when she scored on Cacia Pierre's double down the right field line.
The Chanticleers extended their lead to three in the top of the third when Beth Kassuhn crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Sacred Heart recorded only one hit during the first three innings of play and in the top of the fourth Coastal built their lead up to six. Sara Rasley put the score at 4-0 on a throwing error by the Pioneers. Maples then hit a single that allowed Jasmin Daigle to advance home. Hayden was walked with the bases loaded, which allowed Maples to pick up the Chanticleers' final run of the inning. Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning and the game was called following the inning due to inclement weather.
Morgan Mastriania picked up the win for Coastal on the mound following five innings pitched, allowing three hits, while walking one and striking out one.
Kacie Wentworth took the loss for Sacred Heart after pitching 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits and two walks, while striking out one.
Pierre completed the game with two hits in two at bats, which included a RBI. She was also walked in the fourth inning. Donovan and Pineda both recorded two hits and one run in three at bats, while Donovan also recorded an RBI.
The Chanticleers will return to action at home on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. against IPFW in day two of the Chanticleer Challenge. Coastal will also play Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
