MYRTLE BEACH - The Coastal Carolina softball team plugged along through rainy conditions, a temporary postponement and another brief delay to play one game in the Kickin' Chicken Classic Friday and notched a 7-2 victory over Rhode Island at Carolina Forest High School.
The Chanticleers' second scheduled game of the day - against Loyola Chicago - was postponed. A schedule with three games has been set for Saturday. Coastal will take on Rhode Island for a third time at 1 p.m. and then face Loyola at 3 p.m. Loyola will then take on Rhode Island in the day's final game at 5 p.m.
Against Rhode Island Friday night, CCU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning and cruised from there to improve 4-8.
Morgan Mastriania and Ashley Bagwell combined to limit Rhode Island (0-3) to just two hits. Bagwell (3-2) notched the win in relief, not allowing a hit over 3 2-3 innings, while striking out four and walking one. Mastriania allowed two hits and two runs in 3 1-3 innings. She struck out seven and walked two.
After Daigle drew a one-out walk in the second, Donovan homered over the centerfield fence for her first of the year. Jessie Winans then walked and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Quolas then led off the third with her first home run of the season, to left-center. Cacia Pierre added an RBI single and Donovan drove in two more with a single to cap the four-run inning. Pierre has now had a hit in eight of the last nine games.
In the other game played Friday, Loyola shut out Rhode Island 7-0 in the Ramblers' first game of the season. The three games originally scheduled for Friday were initially canceled for the day after morning rain. However, once the rain had stopped and an opening in the radar was seen, they were rescheduled for later in the afternoon. The Coastal-Rhode Island game was then completed despite light rain and a short delay.
