Coastal Defeats UNCG to Win Battle At The Beach Tournament
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team defeated UNC Greensboro, 12-2, to close out the Battle at the Beach Tournament. The Chanticleers went 4-1 over the weekend to win the tournament.
Coastal (7-3) returns to the CCU Softball Field next weekend (Feb. 24-25) for the Chanticleer Showdown as the Chanticleers host Morehead State, Cleveland State, Penn State and Campbell.
In the bottom of the second, the Chanticleers exploded by scoring nine runs versus UNCG. After a leadoff single from Mellen, Kassidy Smith walked. Then, Chelsea D'Avilar delivered an RBI double to score Mellen. Angela Buccilli followed suit by smacking a two-run RBI single down the right field line to plate Smith and D'Avilar. Later, a three-run shot from both Alvino and Mellen capped off the scoring for the inning at 9-0.
UNCG got on the board in the top of the fourth. Rachael McClaskey pushed a single through the right side to plate Alexis Overdiep to make the score 9-1.
Coastal pushed three runs across the plate for a 12-1 advantage in the fourth inning A bases-loaded walk scored Forbes then Smith delivered an RBI double to send Tooley and Alvino home.
The Spartans added another run in the top of the fifth to provide the eventual final score, 12-2.
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Rahach (4-1) threw 5.0 innings. She allowed seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over her five innings.
