Softball Grabs Victories Over UMKC and Rider
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team swept an opening day mixed doubleheader at the Battle at the Beach tournament, notching two victories. First, the Chanticleers had an extra-inning, 3-2 win over UMKC before Taylor Rahach stunned Rider by pitching a no-hitter in an 11-0 victory.
Coastal (5-2) will return to the field tomorrow to face UMKC at 3pm and UNC Greensboro at 5:30 pm.
In game one, UMKC took an early 1-0 lead over Coastal in the top of the first as Kailey Goodwin delivered an RBI single to score Abby Warkentine.
The Roos added another run in the third inning for a 2-0 advantage. With a runner on third, Ashlin O'Brein pushed an RBI single through the infield to plate Kendra Leach.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Chants tied it up 2-2 to start the comeback thanks to a two-run homer from freshman Kassidy Smith. This was Smith's first career homerun.
The score remained tied for three straight innings until a walk-off home run from Timi Tooley gave the Chanticleers the 3-2 victory to end the game in the eighth inning.
Ashley Guillette (1-1) came in relief and recorded her first win of the season, throwing 1.2 innings to close out the game. Devin Wallace started the game for CCU and pitched 6.1 innings while allowing two runs and 10 hits with three strikeouts.
The Chanticleers carried that winning momentum into game two of the mixed doubleheader to astonish Rider scoring 11 runs over four innings.
Coastal took a 2-0 lead in the first. Alvino and Amanda Daneker smacked back-to-back doubles to get on the scoreboard. With Daneker in scoring position, Tooley hammered a triple to send Daneker home.
In the bottom of the second inning, CCU doubled its lead to make it 4-0. Taty Forbes (2-for-3) delivered a single, then stole second to put the Chants in scoring position. Alvino lined her second double of the game up the middle to score Forbes. Next, Daneker also came through with her second double of the game to score Alvino.
Coastal erupted with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to provide the eventual final score, 11-0. Angela Buccilli started the fire for CCU as she pounded a triple to right field. Then, Forbes hammered her first career homer over the centerfield fence to score Buccilli. Later, with bases loaded, Kailey Mellen's delivered a sac fly and an error on the play allowed both Daneker and Alvino scored. Chelsea D'Avilar capped off the scoring after hammering a three-run homer to make it 11-0.
Rahach (2-1) pitched a nearly perfect game throwing a complete 5.0 innings and allowing only one walk with a career high of 10 strikeouts.
