Mercer Box Score l North Dakota State Box Score
TALLAHASSEE - The Coastal Carolina softball team opened road play earning a 9-3 win over Mercer, before losing 8-3 against North Dakota State on Friday, Feb. 17 to move to 4-2 on the season.
During the first game against Mercer, Coastal jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Brooke Donovan scored on a fly out by Chelsea Pineda.
Mercer picked up three straight outs in the bottom of the inning and the Chanticleers extended their lead in the top of the second as Donovan hit a grand slam home run that scored Jessie Winans, Sara Rasley and Sarah Maplesto put the score at 5-0.
Coastal built a 6-0 lead in the following inning, as Kory Haydenscored her second home run of her collegiate career, knocking the ball out of left field.
The Bears cut into the Chanticleers lead in the bottom of the third, as Tiffany Phillips singled through the right side to score McKenzie Woody and Krista Kennedy.
The Chanticleers answered in the next inning when Donovan hit a triple to score Winans for her second run of the game, putting the score at 7-2.
Kassie Bailey scored for Mercer in the bottom of the third on a Sara Stuckes hit a double to left center.
Rasley hit a double in the top of the fifth that scored Maples, to put Coastal ahead 8-3. The Chanticleers earned their final run of the game in the sixth inning when Hayden hit a single to center field to score Donovan.
Kiana Quolasearned the win on the mound for Coastal after pitching six innings allowing six hits, while walking one and striking out one in 26 batters faced.
Kassie Bailey picked up the loss for Mercer on the mound following 4.2 innings pitched. Bailed allowed nine hits and walked one, as well as striking out one.
Donovan had three hits in three at bats, as well as three runs and five RBI, while she was walked once. Hayden finished the game with two hits in four at bats, along with two RBI and one run. Rasley posted 12 assists for the Chanticleers in the win.
Tiffany Phillips recorded two hits and two RBI in four at bats, while Stuckes had two hits and one RBI in three at bats.
"We had a strong showing against Mercer in our first road game of the season and I was pleased that we were able to score in six of the seven innings," said head coach Kelley Green.
During the second game the Chanticleers came out strong, as Hayden posted her second home run of the day to put Coastal ahead 3-0, as Pineda and Quolas scored on the play.
Both teams were held scoreless during the second inning. Coastal then struggled defensively during the bottom of the third, as the Bison were able to go ahead 7-3. North Dakota State was able to pick up runs off of three doubles and two singles.
The Chanticleers recovered on the defensive side, as they didn't allow a run in the fourth or the fifth, but they were unable to cut into the Bison lead.
North Dakota State scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 8-3, as Amanda Grable hit a single through the right side, which allowed Alex Sobrero to advance home.
In the top of the seventh, Coastal looked to make a comeback, but the Chants were unable to get runners in scoring position and the Bison took the game 8-3.
Ashley Bagwelltook the loss for the Chants, after pitching 2.1 innings giving up five hits and three walks.
Whitney Johnson earned the win for North Dakota State, as she pitched all seven innings giving up four hits, while walking four and striking out 10 in 29 batters faced.
Hayden led the way for the Chanticleers with one hit in two at bats and reccorded three RBI. She was also walked once on the afternoon.
"We struggled in the third defensively and we were unable to recover. We have to be able to pick our self up when we are struggling like North Dakota State did when they went down three early in the game," finished Green.
