COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team (1-2) was shut out 5-0 by South Carolina in the sixth game of the Palmetto State Showdown Saturday, Feb. 12 at Beckham Field.
The Chanticleers could not get its offense going for the second game in a row as the Gamecocks Julie Sarratt held the Chanticleers hitless, pitching her first complete game of the season and striking out five.
Freshman Ashley Bagwell had a good showing in the circle for the Chants, pitching six innings. Bagwell earned her first collegiate start of the season, throwing four complete innings and allowing only one hit. In the fifth, senior Katelin Edwards came in to pitch in relief, but gave up three runs on one hit, forcing Bagwell to return and finish the game. Bagwell finished the game giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out five Gamecocks.
The game remained scoreless through the bottom of the third inning when South Carolina scored on a sacrifice fly, giving it a 1-0 lead. It stayed close until Evan Childs slammed a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the fifth. The Gamecocks scored again on a throwing error at third, giving them a 4-0 lead. The final run of the game came on a double down the left field line by Sarratt, scoring P.J. Fulmer who reached base on a single through the left side.
The Chanticleers tried to find its bats, but could not find a hole as South Carolina went on to win 5-0 behind a solid pitching performance by Sarratt.
Coastal will play its final game of the Palmetto State Showdown Sunday, Feb. 13 at 12:30 p.m. against conference foe Winthrop in a non-conference match up.
