Softball Sweeps Mixed Doubleheader On Saturday
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team notched two victories as they cruised to a 9-1 win over Youngstown State in game one and followed with a come-from-behind win over Towson, 4-3, to sweep the mixed doubleheader on Saturday.
Coastal (3-1) will close out the Kickin' Chicken Classic Sunday afternoon facing off against seventh-ranked Alabama (4-0). First pitch set for 12:30 pm.
In game one with bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Chelsea D'Avilar smacked an RBI single through the left side to plate Mackenzie Budinger. Then, Angela Buccilli drew a bases loaded walk to score Kassidy Smith for an early 2-0 lead.
The Chanticleers doubled their lead to make it 4-0 in the bottom of the second. Adriana Toro singled then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alexis Alvino drove an RBI single up the middle to send Toro home. Then, an RBI double from Tooley scored Alvino.
Youngstown State scored in the top of the third as Sarah Dowd delivered an RBI double to drive in Maddi Lusk to make the score 4-1.
In the bottom of the third Coastal pushed another two runs across the plate to go up 6-1. Toro drove another single up the middle to plate Mellen. Later, with runners on first and second, Buccilli reached on an error to advance pinch runner Michaela McAuley home to make it 6-1.
Coastal padded its lead in the fourth. A leadoff walk from Tooley and a single from Amanda Daneker put runners on first and second. Smith was walked to load the bases for CCU before Toro drew a third walk of the frame to send Tooley to the plate for a 7-1 advantage.
Coastal loaded the bases for a second time in the bottom of the sixth with only one out. D'Avilar smacked an RBI single to center field to send Budinger home. With bases still loaded, Buccilli drew the walk-off walk to score Smith to provide the final score, 9-1.
Ashley Guillette started in the circle for Coastal pitching 2.2 innings. Taylor Rahach (1-0) pitched the final 3.1 innings to record her first win of the season. The two combined for eight strikeouts and allowed only three hits.
The Chanticleers carried their winning ways to the second game of the mixed doubleheader to record a 4-3 come from behind win over Towson.
Towson took an early 2-0 lead over Coastal in the top of the first inning as Holiday Cahill blasted a two run shot over center field.
The next two innings were quiet until the bottom of the third when Coastal scored three runs to gain the lead, 3-2. Alvino and Daneker each delivered a single to put runners on first and second. An RBI single into center field from Mellen brought home Alvino. Then, Toro drew a walk to load the bases for CCU. Smith smacked a two-run single to send Daneker and Mellen home for the lead.
Coastal increased its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth after Buccilli score dthanks to an RBI single by Tooley.
Towson added one run in the top of the sixth for a 4-3 score but could not complete the comeback.
Freshman Devin Wallace (2-0) recorded her second win of the weekend. She pitced 6.0 innings and allowed five hits, three runs, three walks and three strikeouts. Rahach pitched the seventh inning and recorded her first career save as she struck out two of the three batters she faced.
