The Chants Shutout Iowa State 8-0 To Open The Season
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers opened their season in the Kickin' Chicken Classic with a victory over the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday night by the score of 8-0 as junior pitcher Ashley Guillette threw a five-inning complete game shutout allowing just one hit.
Coastal broke open the game in the second inning as senior Timi Tooley led-off with a double to left field. Two batters later Tooley would come into score off the RBI single down the left field line from junior Alexis Alvino. The very next batter, freshman Taylor Sweigart hit a routine ground ball to the Iowa State shortstop but Sami Williams was unable to come up with it clean as the ball rolled to the fence allowing junior Natalie David and Alvino to come around to score.
Freshman Stavi Augur robbed a potential extra-base hit by grabbing a hard line drive by Hannah Carter to stop a momentum building top of the third for Iowa State.
The Chants came back in the bottom of the fourth to put away the Cyclones as they were able to load the bases. Freshman Samantha Sack followed with her first career grand slam and then a subsequent pinch-hit home run by freshman Courtney Dean.
Guillette faced the minimum of 15 batters in her five-inning victory and got help from her defense as she induced a top of the fourth pitcher to catcher to first baseman ground ball double play to end a threat.
The Chants return to action on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. to host Iowa State in their second game of the Kickin' Chicken Classic.
