Women's Soccer's Gunning Named to Third Team All-Region by Soccerbuzz.com
CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer senior Ashleigh GunningBaton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) was named to the All-Southeast Region Third Team by the website Soccerbuzz.com, it was announced recently. She is the first player in Coastal history to earn All-Region honors by the website. (
Gunning was the first Coastal player in school history to earn Big South Player of the Year honors. She played and started in 21 games this season and led the Big South with 15 goals and 39 points. She had game-winning goals in Big South Tournament wins over VMI and Winthrop and was named to the Big South All-Tournament Team. She was named the Big South Player of the Week after scoring a hat trick in Coastal’s 3-2 win over Wagner Sept. 14. She scored two goals in the season opener against Wofford and had a goal and an assist in the win over north Florida Sept. 16. Gunning had three assists in the 6-1 win over High Point Oct. 8. She scored the game-winning goal on Senior Day in a 1-0 win over Radford Nov. 3. Gunning was one of 20 women’s soccer seniors named to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Watch List and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team. Gunning holds the Coastal single-season scoring record and ended her CCU career with 61 points. Gunning also was selected to the All-Big South First Team for the second straight season.
Gunning is the only player in the Big South on the three All-Region Team, which includes players from the ACC, SEC, Atlantic 10 and Southern Conferences.
Coastal ended the 2007 season after recording a school record 15 wins, a Big South regular season championship and a first trip to the Big South Tournament championship game in school history.
