The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (13-6, 5-3 Big South) enjoyed a record-breaking season in 2005. The Lady Chanticleers won a school-record 13 games, led the Big South in goals (52), assists (43) and points (147) and had four All-Big South Team honorees, including the Freshman of the Year in Blair Monroe.
COASTAL HAS FOUR PLAYERS SELECTED TO THE ALL-BIG SOUTH TEAMS: The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team had four players selected to the 2005 All-Big South Conference Teams and had a Freshman of the Year honoree, the conference announced at the Big South Tournament banquet Nov. 2 in Rock Hill, S.C. Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) was named the Freshman of the Year and also was selected to the first team. She was joined on the first team by seniors Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) and Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove). Freshman Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) was named to the All-Big South Second Team. Fisher also was a selection to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Monroe is Coastals first Freshman of the Year since Marisa Kovacs was selected in CCUs inaugural season in 2000. Monroe played in all 19 games for the Lady Chanticleers and led the team and tied for the the Big South lead with 17 goals. The freshman also tied for 11th in the country in goals per game (0.89/g). She broke Coastals single-season goals scored record Oct. 2 against VMI when she had her 12th tally and also is third all-time in CCU history in goals scored. She has had two hat tricks on the season in wins over Chattanooga and Longwood and has scored two or more goals in five matches. A two-time Big South Player of the Week, Monroe had a stretch of three game-winning goals in a row from Sept. 4-10.
Parsons earned All-Big South First Team honors for the third year in a row. She joins Candice Doten (2000-03) as three-time members of the first team from CCU. The senior tied for the Coastal lead with nine assists and was second with 35 points and 13 goals. Parsons leads Coastal in every career category, including goals (38), assists (19) and points (95). Parsons also tops the team with four game-winning goals, including two in overtime wins over Wofford and Winthrop. Parsons has scored a goal in eight of Coastals 18 games and had a hat trick in a 7-1 win over Birmingham-Southern Oct. 16.
Fisher was Coastals third selection to the first team. She was third on the team and tied for seventh in the Big South with 10 goals and ranked sixth in the conference with 28 points. Fisher had a hat trick in a 6-2 win over Charleston Southern Oct. 5 and was named the Big South Player of the Week after that contest. She also had the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Jacksonville Sept. 11 and had two assists in a 7-1 win over Birmingham-Southern Oct. 16. Fisher also has a 3.4473 grade-point average in early childhood education, leading to her selection on the All-Academic Team.
Terry played and started in all 18 games for the Lady Chants and tied for fourth on the team with three assists. The defender assisted on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Wofford and also had assists in wins over Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern. She was been a key part of Coastals defense that has recorded five shutouts and has a 1.58 goals-against average.
FISHER, PARSONS NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMS: The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team had two players selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III University Womens Soccer team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today (Nov. 3). Senior Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) was selected to the first team, while senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) was named to the third team.
MONROE NAMED TO BIG SOUTH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Coastal Carolina University womens soccer freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) was named to the Big South Womens Soccer All-Tournament Team, it was announced after the tournament championship game Nov. 6.
Monroe scored Coastals goal at 52:54 in the 2-1 loss to Charleston Southern in the Big South Tournament first round match Nov. 3. It was the 17th goal of the season, tying her with UNC Ashevilles Hilary McKay for the conference lead. Monroe also had a game-high eight shots against the Lady Buccaneers.
CCU ON TOP OF GOAL LIST: Coastal scored 52 goals in 19 games after the 2-1 loss to Charleston Southern Nov. 3. That mark shattered the record of 42 set in the 2003 season and its the most goals in a season by a Big South team since Radford scored 53 goals in 2002.
Coastal also scored a goal in 18 of its 19 games. Its only shutout came in a 4-0 loss to UNC Asheville Sept. 18.
DOUBLE-DIGIT CLUB: Senior Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) scored her ninth and 10th goals in the 5-0 win over Radford. Coastal now has three players (Fisher, Bobbie Parsons and Blair Monroe) with 10 or more goals.
DEFENSE STEPS UP IN WIN OVER RADFORD: Coastal had its fifth shutout of the season in the 5-0 win over Radford. Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had two saves and the Coastal defense held Radford to just nine shots in the win.
BOBBIE GOING FOR 100: Senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) had two goals in the Radford win and ended her career with 95 points. Parsons finished second this season with 35 points on 13 goals and nine assists.
RECORD BREAKERS: Coastal set two team records in wins over Winthrop and Birmingham-Southern. In the win over the Eagles, Coastal broke the single-season wins record with its 11th victory. The previous mark was 10 set in the 2003 season. Then in the win over the Panthers, Coastal set single-season record for goals scored (45) and points (129). Both records were set in 2003. The Lady Chants already had set the single-season assist record against Charleston Southern.
CCU IN NCAA RANKINGS: Coastal has representation in the final NCAA rankings, released Oct. 23. The Lady Chants are 13th in the country in scoring offense at 2.83 goals per game. Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) tied for 11th in the nation in goals scored (0.89/g).
SENIORS EXCEL ON THEIR NIGHT: The Coastal Carolina seniors combined for four goals and two assists in the 5-0 win over Radford Oct. 22. Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) had two goals apiece, while Rachel Devine (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) recorded two assists. Alissa Wulf (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) started on the defense that recorded its fifth shutout of the year.
PARSONS NAMED BIG SOUTH CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior womens soccer player Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Conference Womens Soccer Co-Player of the Week, the conference office announced Oct. 18.
Parsons scored the game-winning goal in both of Coastals victories this past week. The senior scored just 57 seconds into overtime as the Lady Chants defeated Winthrop 2-1 Oct. 12. It also was the second time this season that Parsons has won a game with a goal in overtime, as she had the game-winner in a 2-1 overtime win over Wofford Sept. 21. She then had her second hat trick of her career in a 7-1 win over Birmingham-Southern Oct. 16. Parsons connected on a penalty kick in the first half and scored two second-half goals to ice the victory.
FISHER NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Coastal Carolina University womens soccer player Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Conference Womens Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced Oct. 11. This is the second straight week and the third overall week that a Lady Chanticleer has been honored by the Big South.
Fisher had three goals and two assists on the week, as Coastal won a key Big South game against Charleston Southern Oct. 5. The senior netted a hat trick in the 6-2 win over the Lady Buccaneers. She scored a goal in the eighth minute to give CCU a 2-0 lead, then broke a two-all tie just 40 seconds into the second half. She wrapped up the scoring at 62:48, giving the Lady Chants its school-record tying 10th win of the season. Fisher also assisted on junior Kristine Kingsburys (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) goal in the 49th minute. Her hat trick was the third by a Coastal player this season. Coastal only had two hat tricks in the first five years of the program. Fisher also assisted on Coastals lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Western Carolina Oct. 8.
SIX PACK PLUS ONE: Coastal put up seven goals in its 7-1 win over Birmingham-Southern Oct. 16. It was the third time this season that Coastal has put up six or more goals in a game. Coastal had six in a 6-4 win over Longwood and a 6-2 win over Charleston Southern. Notre Dame leads the country with five six-plus goal games.
FISHER HAS HAT TRICK IN CSU WIN: Senior Kristina Fisher (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) scored three goals in a 6-2 win over Charleston Southern Oct. 5. It was Coastals third hat trick of the season while CCU only had two in the first five years of the program. Fisher had 10 goals and nine assists this year and was third on the team with 29 points.
BIG SOUTH LEADERS: As a team, Coastal leads the conference in goals, assists and points. Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) tied for the conference lead with 17 goals, while senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) was fourth with 13 goals. Parsons and Fisher led the Big South with nine assists. Monroe tied for second with 36 points, while Parsons was fourth with 35.
SOCON STREAK ENDS: Coastal lost its first game to an opponent from the Southern Conference in a 2-1 setback to Western Carolina Oct. 8. Coastal was 5-0 against SoCon opponents until the loss to the Catamounts.
HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE: Coastal finished 7-2 at home this season at the CCU Soccer Field. Coastals record for wins at home is five, coming in the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
MONROE BREAKS GOALS SCORED RECORD: Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) scored her 12th goal of the season in a 2-0 win over VMI Oct. 1. That goal broke the single-season goals scored record at Coastal, which was previously held by senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) in 2003. Monroe tied for the lead in the Big South in goals scored (17).
PARSONS BREAKS ASSIST MARK: Senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) collected her 16th career assist in the 6-4 win over Longwood Sept. 29, breaking Coastals all-time assist record. The record was held by Kristin Wisse (2000-02). Parsons now holds the career record for goals, assists and points.
KEEPING IT NATURAL: Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had her second hat trick in the 6-4 win over Longwood Sept. 29. Monroe has had two natural hat tricks this season, as she scored all three goals in the 3-1 win over Chattanooga Sept. 4.
STOLL PRESERVES SHUTOUT AGAINST KEYDETS: Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had a season-high eight saves in the 2-0 win over VMI Oct. 1. Stoll also recorded her third shutout of the year, upping her total to nine career blankings.
HAUPT CONNECTS IN FIRST GAME ACTION: Freshman Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored a goal in Coastals 6-4 win over Longwood Sept. 29. It was the first game she has played at Coastal, becoming the first Lady Chant to score in her first game since Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) did the trick Aug. 30, 2002, in a 7-0 win over South Carolina State.
MONROE NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Coastal Carolina University freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) has been named the Big South Conferences Womens Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced Sept. 13. Monroe helped the Lady Chanticleers to a 3-0 week, including a pair of one-goal victories in the JU/Best Western Invitational.
Monroe had two goals and an assist in Coastals 4-0 win over The Citadel Sept. 6 and added the games lone goal in a 1-0 win over Stetson Sept. 10. In a three-game stretch, Monroe had six goals and an assist for 13 points.
COASTAL BREAKS WIN STREAK RECORD: With its 3-1 win over Georgia Southern, Coastal extended its longest win streak in the programs history at five games. During that streak, the Lady Chants outscored their opponents 14-4 and beat three teams from the Southern Conference. The streak was snapped in the conference opener to UNC Asheville.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: When sophomore Madeline Bobo (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) assisted on the first goal in the 7-1 win over Birmingham-Southern Oct. 16, she became the 15th player to score a point this season. Senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) leads the team with 35 points, while freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) is not far behind at 34 points.
CCU WINS THE JU/BEST WESTERN INVITATIONAL: Coastal went 2-0-0 in an in-season tournament for the first time in the programs history, defeating Stetson 1-0 and Jacksonville 3-2 to win the JU/Best Western Invitational. Coastal also won both games by one-goal, upping its mark to 3-0 in one-goal games.
MONROE DOES IT AGAIN: Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) enjoyed an amazing three-game offensive output Sept. 4-10. After connecting on a hat trick against Chattanooga, the freshman scored twice and added an assist in a 4-0 win over The Citadel. She then scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Stetson Sept. 10.
