CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic year, marking the 13th consecutive time that the program has earned the honor.
The award requires teams to have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher for the calendar year. Coastal is one of 593 women's teams honored this year, but one of just six from the Big South Conference. CCU's combined GPA of 3.40 was third-best in the league - just behind High Point (3.41) - and tied for 187th among all the honorees.
As a team, the Chanticleers had 17 players record a GPA of 3.50 or higher during the year. Junior Maddie Phillips was named to the 2013 Big South All-Academic Team after posting a 3.85 GPA for the year as a marketing major. Also leading the way among current members of the squad were Darbie Kelley (3.90), Fia Jonsson (3.80), Jacqueline Rigali (3.75) and Morgan Smith(3.75).
"We're proud of our players and the work they put into their academics," head coach Paul Hogansaid. "We have a great tradition of excellence in the classroom and I'm glad we can build on that success."
The Coastal Carolina men's team also earned NSCAA All-Academic recognition, making CCU one of only 186 schools across all divisions to have both its men's and women's program recognized.
