Women's Soccer's Gunning Named Second Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) was named an ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. Gunning becomes Coastal first women’s soccer Academic All-American.   Gunning, who carries a 3.81 grade-point-average in communications, was the first Coastal player in school history to earn Big South Player of the Year honors. She played and started in 21 games this season and led the Big South with 15 goals and 39 points. She had game-winning goals in Big South Tournament wins over VMI and Winthrop and was named to the Big South All-Tournament Team. She was named the Big South Player of the Week after scoring a hat trick in Coastal’s 3-2 win over Wagner Sept. 14. She scored two goals in the season opener against Wofford and had a goal and an assist in the win over north Florida Sept. 16. Gunning had three assists in the 6-1 win over High Point Oct. 8. She scored the game-winning goal on Senior Day in a 1-0 win over Radford Nov. 3. Gunning was one of 20 women’s soccer seniors named to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Watch List. Gunning holds the Coastal single-season scoring record and ended her CCU career with 61 points. Gunning also was selected to the All-Big South First Team for the second straight season.   Gunning was a First Team Academic All-District selection, while classmate Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England)) was a Second Team honoree.   Coastal ends the 2007 season after recording a school record 15 wins, a Big South regular season championship and a first trip to the Big South Tournament championship game in school history.
