Women's Soccer Moves on the Round Two of BSC Tourney, Smrz' Shootout Goal Seals Victory

CHARLESTON, S.C. — It took nearly three hours to decide, but eventually number five seed Coastal Carolina University advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Conference Women’s Soccer Championship with a 4-3 shootout victory over fourth-seeded Radford University.

Coastal Carolina (5-11-2) advances to play top-seed and regular season champion Elon University (8-8-0) on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.

Becky Smrz provided the winning goal in the shootout, ending a match in which Radford (4-10-4) out-shot Coastal Carolina, 22-14. Coastal Carolina keeper Candice Doten recorded 10 saves during regulation, as well as the two 15-minute overtime periods prior to the shootout.

Radford had two golden opportunities to score late in the second overtime. A shot by Alison Vollick hit off the crossbar, and a follow shot off the rebound by Nikki Porter sailed wide of the goal. Porter had 12 shots during the contest.

In the shootout, Porter opened play with a miss, while Coastal Carolina’s Gretchen Shock scored for a 1-0 lead. Radford answered with a goal by Kate Hensman, but Coastal took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Leah Barrett. After each team missed, Radford tied the shootout with a goal by Holly Smeltzer. Jill Ortiz gave Coastal a 3-2 lead before Radford’s Kelly Bertwell tied the shootout at three with a goal, setting up Smrz’ game-winning heroics on the final shot.
