The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (11-6-1, 6-2-1 Big South) will head to High Point, N.C., for the 2008 Big South Women’s Soccer Championships Nov. 6-9 at the Vert Soccer and Track Complex. The Chanticleers clinched the top seed in the upcoming tournament after tying High Point 2-2 Nov. 1. Coastal Carolina won the regular-season title for the second straight year and its the third time in program history the Chants have garnered the regular-season hardware. Coastal Carolina will face eighth-seeded Gardner-Webb (4-12-2, 2-5-2 Big South) in the first round Thursday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m.   SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB: The Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to VMI 3-2 in double overtime Nov. 2 in their regular-season finale. Stephanie Benshoof and Dawn Rollyson scored goals for GWU in the loss. Angie Harvey leads the Bulldogs with nine points, while Paige Reagan has two goals and four points. In goal, Jessica Tuggle has a 1.38 goals-against average.     SERIES VS. GARDNER-WEBB: Coastal Carolina leads the overall series with Gardner-Webb 2-1. That happened to be the final score of the regular-season meeting between the two schools, as senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) had both tallies in the win Sept. 27.   COASTAL CAROLINA BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Coastal Carolina is 3-5-4 all-time in the Big South Tournament. Coastal Carolina advanced to the championship game of the tournament for the first time in school history last year. The Chants defeated VMI and Winthrop by matching 1-0 scores. Coastal Carolina then tied High Point 0-0, but fell in penalty kicks 5-4.   BACK-TO-BACK REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPS: Coastal Carolina earned an outright regular-season championship for the second straight year after tying High Point 2-2 Nov. 1. Seniors Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) and Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored goals for the Chants in the tie, while sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) saved four shots in 110 minutes.   CHANTS GETTING HEALTHY BEFORE TOURNEY TIME: Coastal Carolina returned three players from injury this week, strengthening the club just before the Big South Tournament. Senior Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) and junior Corie Coles (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown (Lynchburg College) both returned to the pitch in the 5-0 win over USC Upstate Oct. 30. Both players have not played since the East Carolina game Sept. 24. Sophomore Colleen Schohl (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) played in the Francis Marion game Oct. 27, her first game since Aug. 31.   GUNNING, McCOLL EARN FIRST TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS: Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer seniors Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) have been named to the 2008 Academic All-District III Women’s Soccer First Team presented by ESPN The Magazine. Both McColl and Gunning will be eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be announced Nov. 18. McColl earns her second Academic All-District honor, as she was a Second Team All-District selection in 2006. Gunning earns her second straight First Team Academic All-District honor. She was named a Second Team Academic All-American last year.   MONROEON FIRE IN LAST TWO GAMES: Senior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) has scored two goals and added two assists in the last two games for the Chanticleers. In the 5-0 win over USC Upstate, Monroe assisted on the winning goal and scored Coastal Carolina’s fourth goal. Then in the 2-2 tie against High Point, Monroe scored the first goal and had an assist on the second. She now has 41 career goals and 92 career points for the Chants. She also passed Bobbie Parsons for most matches played in a Coastal Carolina uniform with 79.   CHANTS GET SEASON-HIGH FIVE GOALS IN WIN OVER UPSTATE:  Coastal Carolina scored a season-high five goals in the 5-0 win over USC Upstate Oct. 30. Sophomore Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) had her first multi-goal game of her career, while junior Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) scored her first goal of the year and third in her career.   TERRY’S IN STARTING LINEUP:  With senior Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) returning to the starting lineup Oct. 30 against USC Upstate, the Chants now have two Terry’s in the starting 11. Freshman Marissa Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) has started the last five games for the Chanticleers.      SENIORS CONTRIBUTE ON WINNING GOAL VS. VMI: On Senior Night, three seniors had a hand in the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win over VMI Oct. 24. Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored her seventh goal of the season off assists from seniors Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).   10 AGAIN: For the fourth consecutive season, Coastal Carolina has won 10 games after its 1-0 win over VMI. It also is the fifth time in the last six season the Chants have double-digit wins.   MONROE BREAKS THE CAREER GOALS SCORED RECORD: With her goal in the the 3-2 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 7, senior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) scored her 39th career goal, which broke Coastal Carolina’s career goals scored record. Monroe passed Bobbie Parsons on the all-time list. Monroe now is just three points away from Parsons’ mark in that category. Monroe scored the goal in the 21st minute off an assist from senior Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).   WIN STREAK BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD: Coastal Carolina won its ninth match in a row with the 1-0 win over Radford Oct. 11. That streak breaks last year’s seven-game winning streak, which was set from Sept. 25-Oct. 20, 2007. The streak was broken at Charleston Southern Oct. 14 in a 4-1 loss.   CHANTS START 5-0 IN BSC PLAY: For the first time in school history, Coastal Carolina won its first five games in Big South Conference play. The Chanticleers started 4-0 in both 2006 and 2007.   GUNNING DOES IT AGAIN: For the ninth time in a Chanticleer uniform, senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored the game-winning goal in the 3-2 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 7. Her shot from 30 yards out went in the left corner of the goal. Gunning now has eight goals on the season, four of which are game-winning goals.   McCOLL MATCHES HER CAREER MARK: Senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) scored six goals in her first three years at Coastal Carolina. McColl now has six goals in 2008 after scoring the game-winning goal in the 1-0 win over Radford Oct. 11. McColl now is seventh on Coastal Carolina’s all-time goals scored list.   TUPY’S GOAL WINS GAME AGAINST LIBERTY: Sophomore Anna Tupy’s (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) first career goal at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field was a memorable one as her strike with 14 seconds remaining gave Coastal Carolina a 3-2 win over Liberty. Freshman Jessie Benchley (Hudson, Ill./Normal Community West) sent a ball into the box, which was cleared by a Liberty defender. That clear went right to Tupy, whose bending shot went in the upper right corner for the game-winner. It was her second goal and second game-winning goal of the season.   GUNNING GETS BOTH GOALS vs. GARDNER-WEBB: Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) recorded her fifth career multi-goal game Sept. 27 in the 2-1 win over Gardner-Webb. Both goals came in the second half as the Chanticleers moved to 2-0 in the Big South Conference. Her goal in the 48th minute came off a free kick from junior Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence), while her 20-yard shot in the 54th minute was assisted by senior Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).   TUPY EARNS FIRST TALLY AT COASTAL CAROLINA: Sophomore Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) scored her first goal in a Coastal Carolina uniform in the 2-0 win over Presbyterian Sept. 24. The midfielder now has four points in her Chanticleer career. She also has been named to two All-Tournament Teams (Select Kickoff Classic and Winthrop Invitational).   CHANTS EARN BIG WIN OVER ECU: Coastal Carolina had its biggest win of the season Sept. 21 in a 2-1 win over East Carolina, who is eighth in the Southeast Region poll by Soccerbuzz. Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute off a feed from junior Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge). Senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) scored the first goal, while sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) stopped six shots, including two in the last five minutes of play.   GENTILE, TERRY GET FIRST GOALS IN A CHANTICLEER UNIFORM: In the 4-1 win over Austin Peay Sept. 19, junior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro (Herkimer C.C.)) and freshman Marissa Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) scored their first career goals in a Coastal Carolina uniform. Gentile’s was off a pass from senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) in the 70th minute, while Marissa Terry’s goal came off freshman Tori Strengari’s (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) assist in the 84th minute.   HAUPT CONNECTS ON HER NINTH CAREER GOAL: Senior Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored her ninth career goal off a failed clear in the 4-1 win over Austin Peay Sept. 19. She now is tied for ninth with Amanda Gelsomino on Coastal Carolina’s all-time goals scored list.     McCOLL NAMED TO THE LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD LIST: Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer redshirt senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.         McColl becomes the second straight Chanticleer women’s soccer player to be named to the initial list. Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet LSU)) was on the list in 2007. These individuals qualified based on their dedication and achievement in four areas: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition.   HANNA CANCELS HOME TOURNAMENT: The Coastal Carolina Tournament scheduled for Sept. 5 and 7 was cancelled due to Tropical Storn Hanna. It was Coastal Carolina’s first cancelled game since Aug. 30, 2006, when Tropical Storm Ernesto cancelled the College of Charleston game.   McCOLL EARNS BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Coastal Carolina senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand) was selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for games played Aug. 25-31, it was announced today by the League office.         McColl had a remarkable showing last week, helping the Chanticleers to their first win of the season in game four of the Select Kickoff Classic in Greenville, S.C. The senior scored in the eighth and 69th minutes as Coastal Carolina defeated Wofford, 2-0. McColl’s first goal came off an attempted clear by Wofford on a Coastal Carolina corner kick. The final goal was a 30-yard chip over the Terriers’ goalie. McColl also was named to the 11-member All-Tournament Team.   THREE CHANTS NAMED TO SELECT KICKOFF ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Redshirt senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley), senior Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) and sophomore Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) were named to the All-Tournament Team at the Select Kickoff Classic in Greenville, S.C.   McColl scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Wofford Aug. 31, while Terry and Tupy both had solid performances in the games against Furman and Wofford.    McCOLL RETURNS FROM OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE: Redshirt senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) returns to Coastal Carolina after playing for Team New Zealand in the 2008 Summer Olympics in China. The Kiwis tied Japan 2-2, but fell to Norway 1-0 and the United States 4-0. McColl played in the tie against Japan. McColl also played in the 2007 Women’s World Cup in China.   TOUGH BEGINNING STRETCH FOR OPENERS: Coastal Carolina’s first three games are against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. UNC Greensboro defeated Memphis in the opening game of the tournament, but fell to North Carolina in the second round. Duke reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, defeating South Carolina, Georgia and Indiana before falling to Notre Dame. Furman won the Southern Conference Tournament before falling to Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA’s.   COASTAL CAROLINA PICKED AS BIG SOUTH PRESEASON FAVORITES: Coastal Carolina University’s women’s soccer team has been chosen first in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll, as voted by the League’s Head Women’s Soccer Coaches.         Coastal Carolina, which captured the 2007 regular-season title, received three first-place votes and 90 points out of a possible 100 to win the Conference’s women’s soccer championship in 2008. The Lady Chanticleers have finished first or second in the regular-season standings in head coach Rohan Naraine’s two years at the helm. Coastal Carolina finished ahead of 2007 Tournament champion High Point, which collected three first-place votes and 83 points. Liberty finished third in the voting with 75 points and received one first-place vote, while Charleston Southern was fourth in the poll with 73 points and three first-place votes. Radford totaled 56 points for the fifth spot, just ahead of Winthrop (52 points) and new Big South member Gardner-Webb (50 points). UNC Asheville was eighth in the poll with 32 points, while new Big South member Presbyterian was ninth in the voting with 22 points. VMI finished in the 10th and final position with 17 points.   GUNNING NAMED BIG SOUTH PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Redshirt senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) has been chosen as the Big South’s Preseason Player of the Year, the conference office announced August 14.         Gunning, the 2007 Big South Women’s Soccer Player of the Year and First-Team All-Conference selection, garnered five first-place votes and 19 points in the preseason voting. Last season, she helped the Chanticleers to their first regular-season title since 2003 and second overall. An All-Tournament Team selection in 2007, she led the team and the Big South with 15 goals and 39 points and tied for the Conference lead with nine assists. She was ninth in the country in points per game (1.86) and 18th in goals per contest (.714). Gunning was named Third-Team All-Region by Soccerbuzz.com and was an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Second-Team honoree in 2007.   CHANTICLEERS RETURN FIVE ALL-BIG SOUTH SELECTIONS: Coastal Carolina returns five players that were selected to the All-Big South First and Second Teams in 2007, including all three First Team honorees. Seniors Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)), Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) and Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) all return after being named to the First Team last year, while redshirt senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) are back after being named to the Second Team. Coastal Carolina also has three players back after making the Big South All-Freshman Team - Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison), Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) and Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin).
