OF 2006 BIG SOUTH WOMEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT

CONWAY, S.C. – No. 3 seed Liberty tallied three second-half goals to defeat No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina 3-0 in the semifinals of the Big South Women’s Soccer Tournament Friday evening at CCU Soccer Field on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.  The Lady Flames will face No. 5 seed UNC Asheville in the championship game Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line.  The game will be a rematch of last year’s title match, which was won by Liberty, 3-0.

Liberty broke the scoreless tie at the 51:38 mark of the second half when Mallory Neff converted a rebounded shot by Tonya Payne during a scrum in the box in front of Coastal’s net.  The Lady Flames netted a second goal when Neff’s corner kick deflected off a Coastal own goal at 59:08 to make it 2-0 Liberty.  LU’s Mandee Wheelock put the game away at 69:25 when her cross attempt hit the left post and trickled in to make it 3-0, with Amy Oberlin assisting on the score.

Goalie Katherine Neff tallied six goals in net for the Lady Flames, while Coastal’s Jaclyn Stoll suffered the loss.  Liberty had the shot advantage at 13-12.

Liberty (9-7-1) has won a Big South-record three tournament championships, while Asheville will look for its second crown and first since 1995.

QUOTES

Liberty head coach James Price
“I thought it was a really hard fought contest.  We performed well with a lot of solid individual performances.  Now we focus on Sunday and we are looking forward to it.”

Coastal Carolina head coach Rohan Naraine
“After the first half, it was pretty even. It’s mistakes that are going to hurt you and that’s what did tonight.  We gave them two corner kicks and we didn’t clear.  We can’t make those mistakes in a game like this.  You have to give Liberty credit, they’re a good team.  We played hard but couldn’t score when we had chances.”
