Women's Soccer's McColl, Gunning Named First Team Academic All-District
CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer seniors Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) have been named to the 2008 Academic All-District III Women’s Soccer First Team presented by ESPN The Magazine. Both McColl and Gunning will be eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be announced Nov. 18.
McColl earns her second Academic All-District honor, as she was a Second Team All-District selection in 2006. McColl has played and started all 16 games for the Chanticleers, scoring six goals and adding two assists for 14 points. She has three game-winning goals in victories over Wofford, The Citadel and Radford. McColl also has scored two goals in wins over Wofford and The Citadel. She was selected as the Big South Player of the Week Sept. Sept. 2. McColl was one of 30 semifinalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and has been on the President’s List seven times at Coastal Carolina.
Gunning earns her second straight First Team Academic All-District honor. She was named a Second Team Academic All-American last year. She leads the team with seven goals and 15 points. Three of her four game-winning goals have come in Big South play. She scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Gardner-Webb and had game-winners in victories over UNC Asheville and VMI. Gunning was selected the Big South Player of the Week Oct. 28 after the VMI contest. She has 32 career goals at Coastal Carolina and is in the top-five in school history in career goals, assists, points and shots.
McColl and Gunning were the only Big South players on the first team, but there were two players on both the second and third teams from the conference. Laura Eldridge of High Point and Audrey Falconi of VMI were second team selections, while Juliana Duncan of UNC Asheville and Jill Boyer of Radford were selected to the third team.
Coastal Carolina hosts USC Upstate Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
