CHARLOTTE, N.C. The Winthrop womens soccer team, in just its fourth year of existence, has claimed its first-ever Big South regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in this weeks Big South Womens Soccer Championship, which begins Thursday in Conway, S.C., it was determined today as the Conference season concluded this afternoon with Birmingham-Southerns 8-1 win over VMI. The Lady Eagles last seasons No. 8 seed finished the season with a 6-1-1 League mark for 19 points, in addition to a school-record 13 overall wins.
Tournament host Coastal Carolina earns the No. 2 seed with its 6-2-0 (18 points) Big South record after winning 4-3 Saturday night at High Point. Defending Conference champion Liberty is the No. 3 seed at 5-2-1 (16 points), while Birmingham-Southern captures the No. 4 seed with a 5-3-0 Big South record and will face No. 5 seed UNC Asheville (4-2-2, 14 points). High Point and Radford tied for sixth-place at 3-5-0 (nine points), with the Panthers receiving the No. 6 seed due to its win over the Lady Highlanders during the season. Charleston Southern garners the No. 8 seed with its final League mark of 2-6-0 (six points). VMI finished ninth in the Big South at 0-8-0 and did not qualify for the tournament.
The 2006 Big South Womens Soccer Championship begins Thursday, Nov. 2 with four games and concludes with the Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 5. The Big Souths Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship.
