Humphries' Goal Lifts Women's Soccer over Liberty 1-0
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) scored in the 67th minute to lift the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (11-5-1, 5-1 Big South) to a 1-0 victory over Liberty (5-10, 2-4 Big South) Oct. 27 in Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty had to make two saves in the first 1:33, but the Lady Flames outshot Coastal 8-5 in the first half. Freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had three saves, while Lauren Kamphuis stopped two shots in the first half for Liberty. Liberty had five corner kicks in the first half, but could not capitalize on those chances.
Neither team had a shot in the second half until junior Blair Monroe’s (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./Little River) attempt hit the post. Humphries collected the rebound and put it past Kamphuis for her third goal of the season at 66:29. Liberty had three shots after that goal, but Haggard stopped two of them and the third went high, giving Coastal its seventh shutout of the season.
Liberty held the 11-9 shot advantage and the 8-4 corner-kick advantage. Haggard had three saves and lowered her goals-against average to 0.96. Kamphius ended the game with two saves.
Monroe led Coastal with three shots, while Amy Oberlin and Tanya Payne had four shots apiece for Liberty.
Coastal now has five wins in the Big South and is three points ahead of High Point for first place in the conference. Coastal has one more Big South match Nov. 3 against Radford.
Coastal steps out of Big South play Wednesday, Oct. 31 for a 7 p.m., match at USC Upstate.
