CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (10-5, 6-2 Big South) received a goal from senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) in the 78th minute to defeat VMI (7-8-1, 4-2-1 Big South) 1-0 in a key Big South matchup Oct. 24 in Conway, S.C. The weather was the big story on Senior Night, as heavy rain was falling for the whole 90 minutes.
VMI had the first good look at a goal in the 12th minute as Amanda Berrios’ header following a corner kick was on target but saved by sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain). Haggard had two saves in the first half. Coastal Carolina’s best chance of scoring came in the 27th minute as junior Samantha Teijelo’s (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) shot was just above the crossbar.
Coastal Carolina held an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half, while the Keydets had a 3-2 corner-kick advantage. VMI goalkeeper Heidi Beemer had one first-half save.
Beemer had four saves in the second half before the Chanticleers got one through at 77:08. Seniors Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) slid a pass to classmate Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), who fed Gunning. She hit the shot with her left foot and beat Beemer to the left corner of the goal. It was Gunning’s team-leading seventh goal of the season and her 32nd in her career as a Chanticleer. VMI could not get a shot on goal after that and the Chanticleer moved to 6-2 on the year and kept hold of first place in the conference.
Coastal Carolina outshot VMI 17-6 and had a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks. Beemer had six saves for the Keydets while Haggard finished with four saves, recording her fourth shutout of the year. There also were 30 total fouls and three yellow cards given out in the match.
Gunning led the Chants with seven shots, four on goal. Olivia Moore had two shots to lead VMI.
Before the match, the Chanticleers honored seniors Danielle DeSonia (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary), Haupt, McColl, Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) and Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) on Senior Night at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
