Weiler's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory Over Radford

CONWAY, SC – Freshman Laura Weiler’s goal in the 33rd minute of Friday night’s match would prove to be the game-winner for the Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team as it defeated defending Big South Champion Radford, 1-0. The Lady Chants’ record of 9-8-1 is their best since the program’s inception in 2000, besting 2002’s 8-6-4 finish.

Weiler’s goal came with 11:35 to play in the first period off a short cross from the right of the Highlanders’ goal from senior Mary Jo Hajek. Radford keeper Annaliese Yoder dove for the ball, and Weiler took advantage of the opportunity, dribbling to her left for the open shot.

The rest of the match remained scoreless for both teams, with Coastal missing a couple of scoring chances as their shots hit the post.

Play was fairly even throughout the 90 minutes, with CCU only outshooting Radford by four shots. Sophomore Bobbie Parsons led the Lady Chants with four tries, and Radford’s Kara Ramer led her squad with three shots, two on goal.

Senior keeper Candice Doten recorded the shutout as she tallied four saves. Radford’s Yoder and Tara Oleartchick split time in the net, with Yoder grabbing three saves and Oleartchick recording two.

Coastal now stands at 9-8-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the Big South, and Radford falls to 6-7-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the conference.

Coastal women’s soccer plays its next match this Sunday, Oct. 26, taking on High Point at 1 p.m. Being the last home game of the 2003 season, the squad’s 13 seniors will be honored during pregame ceremonies.
