Chants Head to Charleston Southern for Big South Showdown

The Chanticleer women's soccer team will take to the road on Friday, Oct. 22 for a Big South Conference showdown with Charleston Southern.

CONWAY- The Chanticleer women’s soccer team will take to the road on Friday, Oct. 22 for a Big South Conference showdown with Charleston Southern.  

Coastal is currently second in the Big South with 12 team points while Charleston Southern is first with 16.  After the match, both teams will be on the road for their two final Big South games against Gardner-Webb and Winthrop before the conference tournament starts on Nov. 4.  

The Chanticleers are 4-1-1 in their last six games including their most recent victory over UNC Asheville by the score of 4-1.  Coastal’s four goal output matched the Chants season high that was originally set in the 4-2 victory over College of Charleston on Aug. 28.  

Senior Anna Tupy continues to lead the Chanticleer attack with a team high four goals on the season with the most recent being the game winner in the 1-0 victory over Presbyterian.  Tupy has also taken 29 shots this season with 18 on goal, both of which are Coastal team highs.  Her four goals currently tie for tenth most in the Big South this season.  

On the defensive side, Coastal has only surrendered seven goals in its previous ten games and have collected four shutouts along the way.  The Chanticleer backline has limited its opponents to a mere 16 shots during the previous three games going 2-0-1 during the stretch.  Charleston Southern will present a strong challenge to the group as the Buccaneers currently sit atop the Big South in every offensive category.  

Charleston Southern’s attack features senior forward Marky Boyce who was currently leads the nation with 19 goals on the season.  Boyce has produced seven of the Buccaneers eleven game winners this season and accounts for 42 percent of Charleston Southern’s goal production.  

Opponents have shown that the Buccaneers can be scored on as Charleston Southern has given up 12 goals in the last ten games.

Coastal trails in the all-time series with Charleston Southern 2-7-3.  The last meeting between the two teams went the way of the Buccaneers as Charleston Southern pulled out a 1-0 double overtime victory on Oct. 23, 2009.
