The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (11-4-1, 5-2 Big South) used a goal from junior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./University of New England) in the 34th minute and six saves from senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary), including three dramatic stops in the last 12 minutes, to defeat UNC Asheville (5-6-2, 3-2-2 Big South) 1-0 Oct. 21 in Conway, S.C.Gelsomino scored at 33:25 when she received a cross from sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) and beat UNC Ashevilles Veronica Lazar to the right corner. It was Gelsominos second goal of the season. Coastal outshot UNCA 5-4 in the first half with the Bulldogs picking up the only corner. Stoll and Lazar had one save apiece.
Stoll had five saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. In the 79th minute, Stoll deflected Juliana Duncans shot to the crossbar. Emily Elstrom then recovered the rebound and shot, but Stoll came up and knocked it wide. Then in the 83rd minute, Stoll saved a shot from the right corner by UNCAs Shoshana Fried.
The Bulldogs outshot Coastal 10-6 and had a 3-1 corner-kick advantage. Lazar had one save for the Bulldogs, while Stoll collected her fourth shutout of the season in goal.
Sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand) led Coastal with two shots, while UNCAs Meagan Bradham had three to lead the team.
Coastal honored its eight seniors at halftime of the game. Heather Barnes (West End, N.C./Pinecrest), Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College), Stepheney Gerhardt (Mohawk, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.), Leah Hackmann (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), Kristine Kingsbury (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville), Sara Moore (Birmingham, Mich./Bowling Green), Stoll and Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) played their final regular-season game at the CCU Soccer Field.
Coastal travels to Florence, S.C., to face Francis Marion Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. UNC Asheville is at East Tennessee State Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
