Women's Soccer Takes Sole Possession of First Place with 2-0 Win over Winthrop

The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (10-4-1, 4-0 Big South) won its seventh straight game and took over sole possession of first place with a 2-0 win over Winthrop (4-5-4, 3-1 Big South) Oct. 20 in Rock Hill, S.C. Coastal scored two goals in a 2:17 span to start the second half.
Coastal outshot Winthrop 8-7 in the first half, but the two teams remained scoreless after 45 minutes. Freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had three saves in the first half, while Winthrop’s Dimitra Poulos stopped four shots. Winthrop had the 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
After two corner kicks to open the second half, there was a scramble in the box by the Coastal goal. Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet) got her foot on the ball and put it past Poulos for her 11th goal of the season at 46:42. The Lady Chants added insurance at 48:59 when Gunning sent a cross in the box to junior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach), who beat Poulos for her ninth goal of the year. Haggard had three second-half saves to preserve her fourth shutout of the year as the Lady Chants improved to 4-0 in the Big South.
Coastal outshot Winthrop 20-11 in the game. Poulos had 10 saves for the Eagles, while Coastal had the final advantage in corner kicks 4-3. Gunning led Coastal with five shots, while Winthrop’s Michelle Butler had three shot attempts.
Coastal now has six shutouts on the season, including five of the last seven games. Also, the visiting team now has won three straight games in this season series.
Coastal will host Charleston Southern Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m., at the CCU Soccer Field. The game will be video streamed on THE EDGE at www.BigSouthSports.com.
