CONWAY, S.C. Sophomore Heather Haupt (West Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored a pair of second-half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and give the Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (10-3-1) a 2-1 win over Longwood (9-5-2) Oct. 16 in Conway, S.C. The victory secured a 10-win season for the Lady Chanticleers, the third time in the last four years CCU has accomplished that feat.
Longwood got on the board first at 15:38 when Kaylyn Mahon collected a Katie Young pass, dribbled up the middle of the box and scored in the left corner for her fifth goal of the year. Coastals best chance came in the 42nd minute when sophomore Blair Monroes (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) shot hit the right post.
Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had two first-half saves, while Longwoods Anne Whitmore stopped one shot. Coastal outshot the Lancers 6-4, but Longwood had all seven corner kicks.
Haupts first goal came at 59:59 as classmate Chelsea Terry (Charleston, S.C./James Island) passed from midfield after a foul. Haupt collected it from about 10 yards out and beat Whitmore in the right corner. The sophomore then scored her third goal of the season at 68:23 off a pass from midfield by sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley). Longwood had its best chance as time expired, but a Brenda Cary shot from the right side was saved by Stoll.
Coastal outshot Longwood 13-7, with the Lancers holding an 8-0 corner-kick advantage. Both goalkeepers had four saves on the night.
Coastal scored two or more goals for the ninth straight game in the win. Also, three of Haupts four career goals have come against Longwood.
Coastal steps back into conference play Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m., against Charleston Southern. Longwood hosts VMI the same day at 7 p.m.
