The Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (6-8-1, 2-3-1 Big South) had goals from junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) and sophomore Kristine Kingsbury (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and the CCU defense had its fifth shuout of the year in defeating Winthrop University (4-11, 0-5 Big South) 2-0 Oct. 16 in Conway, S.C.
Coastal honored its five seniors before the game and one senior, Leah Barrett (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) had a hand in the first goal, lobbing a pass to Parsons, who beat Winthrops Kelly Turney to the ball and put it in the left side of the net at 33:39. It was Parsons eighth goal of the year. Coastal outshot the Eagles 9-3 and had a 4-2 corner-kick advantage in the first period. Turney had five saves for the Eagles in the first half, while sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) stopped two Eagle shots.
The second half was a defensive battle, as Coastal had three shots on goal compared to two for Winthrop. The insurance goal took place at 82:04 when Kingsbury took the ball from midfield and made a run all the way to the left side of the box, beating Turney for her first career goal.
Stoll had two saves for her fifth shutout of the season. Turney stopped seven shots for the Eagles. Coastal ended the game with a 15-7 shot advantage, while the Lady Chanticleers also had 16 fouls, compared to six for Winthrop.
Seniors Barrett, Erin Blevins (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia), Jennifer Maxwell (Englishtown, N.J./Notre Dame), Johanna Rosier (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Lindsay Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) were honored before the game as part of the Senior Night festivities.
Parsons led everybody with four shots, three on goal. Jennifer Hensley had three shots for Winthrop.
Coastal travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face Samford in a non-league contest Friday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. (EDT). Winthrop travels to VMI Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m.
