RADFORD, Va. Senior Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) scored on a direct kick with just 5:27 remaining, lifting the Coastal Carolina University womens soccer team (9-3-1, 4-1 Big South) to a 2-1 win over Radford (5-8, 2-3 Big South) Oct. 14 in Radford, Va. The win was Coastals first at Radford in school history and propelled the Lady Chants to a 4-1 record in the Big South.
Radford got on the board first at 16:44, when Lindsay Pendergraph received a pass from Lisa Channon at around 10 yards out and beat senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) to the right corner. Coastal would tie the game under 12 minutes later when sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) recovered a loose ball from Radford goalie Tara Oleartchick and scored to an empty net to tie the game at one. It was her eighth goal of the season.
Both teams had five shots in the first half, while Coastal had a 3-1 corner-kick advantage. Stoll had one save with Oleartchick recording three saves.
Both teams had chances to score in the second half, as Stoll stopped two shots. At 84:33, Radfords Laura Culver fouled and was received a yellow card just outside the 18-yard box. Borucinskis left-footed shot beat Oleartchick high and to the left corner for the game-winner.
Radford finished the game with a 10-8 shot advantage, with Coastal earning a 5-3 corner-kick advantage. Stoll had three saves for her ninth win of the season in goal. Oleartchick had four saves for the Highlanders.
Monroe led Coastal with three shots, two on goal. Pendergraph led Radford with four shots.
