Charleston Southern University's (6-7-1, 1-1-1 Big South) Brianna Murphy scored with just 22 seconds remaining in the second half, breaking a 1-1 tie and defeating the Coastal Carolina University women's soccer team (5-8-1, 1-3-1 Big South) 2-1 Oct. 13 in Charleston, S.C.
Coastal had the best chances to score early as Charleston Southern goalie Miki Wilson made two point-blank saves in the first 20 minutes and junior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) had a shot saved by a CSU defender at 25:15. The Bucs drew first blood at 33:31 as Katie Crona scored her ninth goal of the year off a cross from Natalie Jackson. Coastal outshot the Bucs 9-7 and had a 6-2 corner-kick advantage. Sophomore Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had four saves in the first period for the Lady Chants.
Coastal tied the score eight minutes into the second half as freshman Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) picked up a loose ball in the box and scored in the open net at 52:36. It was her second goal of the season and the second in as many games. Charleston Southern had two breakaway chances, one by Nicole Tomlin and one by Murphy with one minute remaining, but Stoll saved both shots. Charleston Southern then recovered a loose ball in the box at 89:38 which Murphy put past Stoll for the game-winner.
Stoll had eight saves for Coastal in the loss, while Wilson stopped seven shots. The Lady Chants had a 19-14 shot advantage and an 8-3 corner-kick advantage. Parsons led CCU with six shots.
Coastal will host Winthrop Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. The match is part of Senior Night at CCU Soccer Field.
