Women's Soccer Stays Unbeaten in the Big South with a 1-0 Win over Radford
RADFORD, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (9-3, 5-0 Big South) stayed unbeaten in the Big South Conference with a 1-0 road win at Radford (7-1-3, 1-1-1 Big South) Oct. 11. Coastal Carolina extended its school-record winning streak to nine in a row and the Chanticleers open 5-0 in conference for the first time in school history.
Coastal Carolina received the only goal it would need at 27:47. Senior Emily McColl’s (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) shot went in and through the hands of Radford goalie Lisa Lubke for the one-goal advantage. It was McColl’s sixth goal of the season, which leads the team.
Coastal Carolina outshot Radford 5-1 in the first half. Lubke had two saves in the first 45 minutes, while sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) did not have a save in the first half.
The Chanticleers held a 5-4 shot advantage in the second half, but the big play came on the Coastal Carolina defensive end. In the 71st minute, Radford’s Maryellen Derenda had an open look off a corner kick from six yards out, but sophomore Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) stopped the shot just before clearing the line. Haggard had one save in the second half to preserve her third shutout of the season.
Coastal Carolina had the 9-5 shot advantage in the game. Radford attempted five corner kicks, compared to two for the Chants. Lubke had five saves in the loss for the Highlanders. Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) led Coastal Carolina with four shots, while Derenda and Ashley Johnson had two apiece for Radford.
