SPARTANBURG, S.C. After a number of close games, Coastal Carolina's women's soccer team finally broke through and earned its first victory of the season, pounding Wofford 5-1 Tuesday night in Spartanburg. Jill Delano tallied a goal and two assists to lead the Lady Chants
Jennifer Maxwell opened the scoring less than ten minutes into the game, knocking one in after a corner kick by Delano. Twenty minutes later, Leah Barrett scored off of a pass from Jill Ortiz to make the score 2-0.
In the second period, Coastal Carolina came out strong immediately, as Delano scored less then four minutes in on a free kick. At 50:39, the Lady Chants' Jennifer Tafel beat Wofford keeper Katie Menegaz on a fast break to put the score at 4-0.
The Lady Terriers would attempt a comeback, as Faith Stewart scored off of a pass from Abby Anderson to give Wofford a goal at 80:44. Six minutes later, however, Coastal Carolina sealed the win with a second corner kick from Delano, this time scored by Joanna Rosier.
Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Candice Doten played an extremely strong game for her squad, making six saves with no goals against in 79:08 of play. Menegaz played the full 90 minutes for Wofford and made five saves.
The Lady Chantsimprove to1-7-2 on the season, whileWofford falls to 2-8-0.
