Six in a Row - Women's Soccer Defeats High Point 6-1 to Set All-Time School Winning Streak
CONWAY, S.C. –Fueled by a hat trick from junior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) and five points from senior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England)), the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (9-4-1, 3-0 Big South) defeated High Point 6-1 Oct. 8 in Conway, S.C. Coastal put up four first-half goals in winning its sixth game in a row, which is a new all-time school record.Coastal did a lot with its chances in the first half, scoring four goals on five shots. At 7:01, Monroe received feeds from Gelsomino and senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) and beat High Point’s Marisa Abbott near post for the 1-0 lead. Monroe would score her second of the day at 15:32 as a free kick from senior Emma Humphries (Wellngton, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) went to Gunning, who would feed the junior for a 2-0 advantage. It was Monroe’s sixth game-winning goal of the season. Gelsomino got into the act at 21:42 from a feed to space by Gunning. Humphries then took a cross from redshirt junior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) at 26:45 and beat Abbott for her second goal of the season. Coastal outshot High Point 5-3 in the first half and had the period’s only corner kick. There were no saves in the first 45 minutes, while the Lady Chants had 10 fouls to High Point’s six.Monroe earned her third hat trick as a Lady Chanticleer at 56:19. She took a pass from Humphries and beat Hannah Nail to the upper part of the goal. Gelsomino scored her second goal of the day at 64:12 when she deposited a rebound off a Gunning shot in the back of the net. High Point got on the board at 65:17 as Sara Rager scored off a Laura Eldridge midfield pass.Coastal had the 12-9 shot advantage and a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) and Nail had one save apiece. Haggard earned her eighth win in goal.Coastal’s six wins in a row breaks the all-time record of five in a row, set during both the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Coastal also has won nine out of the last 10 games. Monroe now has 33 career goals at Coastal, moving her within five of the all-time record set by Bobbie Parsons (2002-05). Gunning’s three assists give her 28 points on the season.Coastal now takes a 12-day break and returns to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 20 at Winthrop.
