Women's Soccer, Monroe Set Records in 3-2 Win over UNC Asheville

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (8-3, 4-0 Big South) defeated UNC Asheville (5-8-1, 3-2 Big South) 3-2 in a Big South Conference matchup Oct. 7 in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers set two records in the process. Coastal Carolina won its school record eighth-straight match while senior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) scored her 39th career goal, setting the school career goals scored mark.
Coastal Carolina controlled most of the possession in the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs 14-3 in the first 45 minutes. The Chants were on the board in the 21st minute as Monroe collected a shot off the post by senior Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and beat UNCA’s Veronica Lazar for the 1-0 lead. Coastal Carolina made it 2-0 in the 34th minute as junior Dana Gentile (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro (Herkimer C.C.)) took a pass from classmate Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge (Loyola Ill.)) and shot in the right corner for her second goal of the season.
Lazar had five saves in the first half, while both teams attempted one corner kick.
UNC Asheville cut into the Chanticleer lead at 57:36 as McKenna Stockhausen took a free kick from Juliana Duncan and beat sophomore Karen Pavlick (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) for her fourth goal of the year. Asheville kept the pressure on and tied the game at 61:13 as Robyn Busha’s shot from 15 yards out went in the left side of the goal. Her goal was assisted by Stockhausen. The game would be decided at 72:53 as senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) took a 30-yard shot, which went in the upper left corner for the game-winning goal. It was the fifth goal of the year for Gunning and the third game-winning goal of 2008.
Coastal Carolina outshot UNC Asheville 23-8 and enjoyed a 3-1 corner-kick advantage. Pavlick had one save for the win in her first start of the season in goal. Lazar made nine saves for the Bulldogs. Gunning took five shots to lead the Chants, while Lindsey Bragg had three shots for Asheville
Coastal Carolina breaks the winning-streak mark, originally set Sept. 25-Oct. 20, 2007. Monroe broke Bobbie Parsons’ record with her first-half tally. She also has 86 points in her career, which is nine behind Parsons in that career record.
Coastal Carolina heads to Radford, Va., to face Radford Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. UNC Asheville is at Liberty the same day at 7 p.m.
