ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (8-4-1, 2-0 Big South) stayed unbeated in conference play with its 2-0 win over UNC Asheville Oct. 6. Sophomore Maegen Hellberg’s (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) first career goal was the game winner as the Lady Chanticleers won their fifth game in a row.
Coastal outshot the Bulldogs 8-6 in the first half and the Lady Chants had their chances of scoring. Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) hit a laser that was saved by Veronica Lazar in the 30th minute. Junior Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) then had a chance in the 37th minute, but Lazar again came up with the save. UNC Asheville’s best chance came in the 42nd minute as Joy Haynes’ shot was swatted away by freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain).
Haggard had two first-half saves, while Lazar came up with three stops. Coastal took two of the game’s three corner kicks. Junior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had three shots for CCU in the first half.\
Senior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) nealy put the Lady Chants on top as her 30-yard shot hit the crossbar. Coastal did get on the board as Hellberg received a cross from senior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England)) and struck a 10-yard shot past Lazar. Coastal built a two-goal advantage as Gunning hit a 20-yard shot for her 10th goal of the season.
Coastal outshot Asheville 16-10 in the game and had a 4-2 corner-kick advantage. Haggard stopped three shots for her second straight shutout, while Lazar had five saves for UNCA. Humphries had four shots to led CCU, while Meagan Bradham led the Bulldogs with five shots.
Coastal hosts Big South rival High Point Monday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m., at the CCU Soccer Field.
