Gelsomino's Goal Gives Women's Soccer a 1-0 Win over Presbyterian

CONWAY, S.C. –Senior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England)) scored in the 79th minute, breaking a scoreless tie and giving the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (7-4-1) a 1-0 win over Presbyterian (3-5) Oct. 3 in Conway, S.C.   The first half saw only two shots-on-goal between the two teams. Coastal freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) and Presbyterian’s Erin Sinkuler had a save apiece. Coastal outshot Presbyterian 7-4 in the first 45 minutes and had a 4-1 corner-kick advantage.   Coastal had good looks to score in the second half. Senior Ashleigh Gunning’s (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) flick was just wide right at 46:32, while the Lady Chanticleers had numbers at 69:45 that led to a shot by senior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College) and a save by PC’s Abby Young. The Coastal goal finally came at 78:39 when Gelsomino received a pass from junior Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and beat Young for her third goal of the season. Presbyterian had a good chance of scoring a goal in the final 10 seconds, but Maggie Carruth’s shot was saved by Haggard.   Coastal outshot Presbyterian 15-7 and had five corner kicks to Presbyterian’s one. Haggard had two saves for her second shutout of the season, while Young had three second-half saves for the Blue Hose. Gunning led Coastal with six shots, while Carruth and Tricia Bryan had two shots apiece for Presbyterian.   Coastal steps back into Big South play Saturday, Oct. 6 against UNC Asheville. Game time is at 12 p.m., in Asheville, N.C. Presbyterian hosts Winthrop the same day at 7 p.m.
