Women's Soccer Starts Road Trip in Style with 2-0 Win over the College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (4-4-1) started its three-game roadtrip in style with a 2-0 victory over the College of Charleston (3-5) Sept. 25 in Charleston, S.C. Coastal earned its second shutout of the season and had two first-half goals to get back on the winning track.

Junior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) got the Lady Chanticleers off on the right foot when her 20-yard blast beat Cougar goalie Sarah Wiggers to the left corner at 27:41. It was Monroe’s third goal of the season. On the goal, senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) earned her fourth assist and 18th point of the season. Up to that point, both teams had four shots, with Coastal coming up with a team save on a Megan Manthey shot in the 14th minute. Freshman Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) blocked her shot on the right side of the goal.

Gunning earned a penalty kick in the 36th minute when she was fouled by Wiggers in the box. Gunning shot was in the upper right hand side of the goal for her eighth tally of the season, giving CCU a 2-0 lead.

Coastal outshot the Cougars 8-7 in the first half, while the Lady Chants had six shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks. Freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had two saves, while Wiggers stopped four shots.

Coastal received a scare in the 54th minute when Chrissy Caruso’s header off a free kick hit the crossbar. Coastal also had good opportunities as a back heel flick by Monroe was just wide and a Gunning free kick went just high. Haggard had two saves in the second half for CCU to preserve the shutout.

Coastal outshot the College of Charleston 12-11, while both team’s had four corner kicks. Haggard had four saves for her first career shutout, while Wiggers ended the game with four saves. Gunning had five shots to lead CCU, while Manthey had three shots for C of C.

Coastal earns its first victory over the Cougars in school history. The series is now 1-1-2 after four meetings.
