CONWAY, S.C. –Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer player Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) has been chosen as a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for women’s soccer, the organization announced today (Sept. 24). Gunning is one of 20 women’s soccer candidates in the nation up for this award. The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award is given out in eight NCAA Division I sports to a senior student athlete who excels both on and off the field. While the on-the-field performance during their collegiate soccer careers is a factor in determining candidates and the eventual winner, their personal character and off-the-field achievements in the classroom and community are major areas of focus. Gunning, who carries a 3.847 grade-point-average in communications with a journalism minor, leads Coastal and the Big South with seven goals and 17 points this season. Gunning had a hat trick in the 3-2 win over Wagner, scoring all three goals in the second half, and added two goals in Coastal’s season-opener at Wofford. Gunning is currently fourth in both career goals and points in Coastal Carolina school history. From the list of 20 candidates in women’s soccer, a national media committee will select 10 finalists in both divisions in October for the 2007 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote beginning October 16 and concluding November 21. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches, media and sponsors to determine the recipient of the award. Winners will be announced during the NCAA Soccer Championships, scheduled on December 7-9 in College Station, Texas, for women. Gunning is the second CCU athlete to be on the Senior CLASS watch list. Coastal baseball played Andy DeLaGarza was among the 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award this past spring. For more information on the award, visit www.seniorclassaward.com. Coastal will travel to Charleston, S.C., to face the College of Charleston Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. 2007 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Women’s Soccer Candidates Aubrey Aden-Buie, PennS tate StaceyBishop, Florida Rachel Buehler, Stanford Kelsey Carpenter, Texas Amanda Cinalli, Notre Dame Ashleigh Gunning, Coastal Carolina Joanna Haig, Louisville Valerie Henderson, UCLA Courtney Hooker, California Stephanie Lopez, Portland Jillian Loyden, Villanova Jennifer Manis, UCF Ella Masar, Illinois Jessica Maxwell, North Carolina Yolanda Odenyo, Oklahoma State Lindsey Ozimek, Charlotte Kirsten Van de Ven, Florida State Sue Weber, Hofstra Kari Weniger, Navy Angie Woznuk, Portland
