Barton Named Big South Defensive Player of the Week

Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Jessica Barton has received the Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors for games played Sept. 13-19, as announced today by the League office.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Jessica Barton has received the Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors for games played Sept. 13-19, as announced today by the League office. Liberty forward Aimee Luurtsema has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women’s Soccer Attacking Player of the week.  

Barton helped the Chanticleers upset ACC foe Clemson 1-0 last Friday by making four saves in the win.  It was the first time the Chanticleers defeated an ACC opponent in school history and the first career shutout for the sophomore netminder.  Barton went 1-1 with a 0.50 goals against average in 180 minutes played last week; in addition, Barton registered six saves and a .857 save percentage.   Barton currently has 31 saves through nine games this season.  

Barton and the Chanticleers will return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 2 as they open their home and Big South season against defending champion High Point.  Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.
