More Information:

GREENVILLE, N.C. – A goal by senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) with 11:29 left in the match broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (4-3) a thrilling 2-1 win over East Carolina (5-3) Sept. 21 in Greenville, N.C. Coastal Carolina won its fourth straight match in the first-ever meeting with the Pirates.   Both first-half goals came by way of a corner kick. In the 13th minute, Coastal Carolina earned a corner. Junior Samantha Teijelo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) crossed into the box and an East Carolina defender tried to clear. Senior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) controlled the ball and shot from 20 yards out, beating ECU’s Amber Campbell for her fifth goal of the year. In the 17th minute, the Pirates earned a corner. Nicole Moore fed into Madison Keller, whose header beat sophomore Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) in the right corner. East Carolina had a great chance to score in the 42nd minute. Kimmy Cummings had a breakaway with her shot getting past Haggard. The shot did not have enough pace and Haggard was able to snag it before crossing the goal line, keeping it 1-1 going into halftime.   East Carolina held a slight 5-4 advantage in shot. Both teams had three corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. McColl had two shots to lead the Chanticleers, while Keller led ECU with two tries.   The possession was fairly equal in the second half, with the Chanticleers coming through in the 79th minute. Junior Sarah McPartlan (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge (Loyola Ill)) fed Gunning on the left side. She then shot from around 15 yards out and beat Campbell in the right corner.  East Carolina had chances in the last 10 minutes. Amanda Malkiewicz had a good look on goal, but her shot was saved by Haggard in the 85th minute. Haggard then had a huge save on a header from Keller with just 11 seconds remaining to preserve the fourth straight win by the Chanticleers.   Coastal Carolina outshot East Carolina 12-10 in the match. McColl led Coastal Carolina with four shots, while Gunning and senior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had two shots apiece. Haggard had six saves in the win, her fourth of the season. East Carolina had the 6-3 corner-kick advantage, while Keller had three shots to lead ECU.   Coastal Carolina concludes its eight-match road trip Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Presbyterian in the Big South opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
